skid plate

If you ride off trail, yes. If you always stay on the trails, you probably should anyway. Cheap insurance that will save you a lot of money should you hit something. I use the Yamaha skid plate on all my sleds and have been happy. They are only about $120 USD MSRP.

Skid plate install

Anyone know if you can install a skid plate on the Apex/Attack sleds with it on a Mar-Lift?

I ordered a skid plate, and hopefully I'll get the winch handle for the Mar lift I bought a few weeks ago by the time the plate comes in!

Or is it better just to put the sled on it's side?

Call Kevin at Port yamaha he'll hook you up. Yes you need one for any type of riding. That Oil pan is right under the Fiber palte and if you hit something hard you'll put a hole thought it and the Oil pan. the Skid plate is a must on all RX, Apex and RS sleds.

So how do you change the oil with a ski plate on or does it even matter. I have not even bothered to look at the bottom of my sled yet.

The plate comes with a neat hardware kit. The kit allows you to attach the plate with screws making removal for oil changes a snap.

In one of SnowGoers latest issues there's a picture of an Apex GT with it's skis off the ground going down the trail. Look at the fibre bottom cover on the sled and you'll see why you should have a skid plate. Wish I could tell you which issue or page, but I've seen that picture more than once.

Not sure if my previous post was mis-read, as I just wanted to know if the sled is on the Mar Lift sled lift, if I would be able to do the skid plate install then, or is it easier just to roll the sled on its side to put the plate on?

Response to xcsp's question I used my lift to lift the sled than then lowered it onto milk crates under the spindles and under the track then I removed the lift. This gives you a clear shot of the belly pan. I took the access plate off to see what I was drilling into. The chain case side rear rivet that needs to be drilled out is close to some hoses and lines so be careful if you pull the cover you will see what I mean.

I don't know what your lift looks like, but I used a rec-lift to install my skid plate with no problems. I can't imagine owning sleds without a lift anymore...best $175 I ever spent.

i tilted mine and set the ski on a large wire spool, I did each side that way, worked great, done in 20 mins !Looks great and i feel better knowing i have some protection while in the fields..
