skid replacement

Anybody ever have decent success with changing out a mono shock rear skid with either a nytro rtx or a polaris Iq skid for a beefier setup? My friend has an 05 RX1with the plain old mono shock suspension. It has some twists and cracks in it, and needs about $750.00 in parts; if we bought them new for the mono shock skid. I was thinking of putting in a used 121" track that can handle the harder riding instead of beefing up this suspension. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? The guy does ride hard and fast.

going to have tons of opinions on this. lots of ppl have swapped out to another brand rear skid in theirs. tons of posts on this.

i do not think anyone has put a shorty nitro skid into a rx1/apex chassis. i know nate007 loves the xtx one he put in his apex.

If your buddy is having a lot of trouble, and he's handy, I doubt he'd miss the old suspension.

Cat, Doo, and Poo all make exellent conversions. If going Polaris, the IQ is an inch narrower than the tunnel and needs 1/2 shims in all four corners to make up for it. The Edge and Pro X would not have that issue, and are exellent conversions as well.

I have seen it in action and am still in awe. That thing eats bumps like nothing I have seen.

I found an IQ track for sale pretty cheap off an 07 Poo. I heard how durable and strong they are. Also that Yamaha is using them on their racing sleds now.

So you are saying there are better options for the RX models? There is a brand new 121" studded track on his mono shock. So we would like to use the same one to save costs. I thought the IQ looked like a deal, but a deal that might not be the right choice? Polaris IQ? doesn't sound right???????


Maybe I will put this on my Nytro instead. Gives more of that racing sled feel

The later Poo skids are known as IQ skids, named after the generic chassis name, and the earlier (01-05) skids work as well, are easily as durable.

I found both the IQ, and sc-10/3 skid packages for a decent price. Being that the IQ needed the spacers, and I don't know the width of the track on an IQ; I wanted to make sure his old track which I took off of an 07 Apex would fit whatever skid we were recommended for this setup. Didn't know if some of the other brands run a different width. Not to sound like an idiot (which I am sure I do ) Just never owned anything but a Yamaha, and never tried to retrofit other brands parts into a Yamaha.
Don't want to invest in the wrong skid, and have to cost the guy more money, or have to resell a skid I just bought. Thanks again for the help guys

ahicks is right on, most of the 14 & 15" tracks are identicle except for the very outside edge of the track.
The drive knubs/windows and such are the same, they simply take 1/2" off the very outside edge of the track.

The hardest part was getting exact measurements for where to mount the skid!!!
Collected about 30 different measurements from many different people, threw out the odd ones and averaged the rest.
Still had to shorten the distance from front to back, etc.
IE: The engineering is already done for you on this one, you don't have to re-invent the wheel.

Right, the IQ tunnel is narrower, as well as the skid - but it still uses a standard 15" track. Dimensions to install any of the Poo skids is pretty well documented as well - just make sure you use the bottom of the tunnel protectors as the top of the tunnel for your measurements!
