Anybody else have to swap a starter yet? Does the motor have to get yanked? Looks like it'd be a P.I.T.A. to swap.

Starter spins but doesn't engage.

Tried whackin it while the wifey turned the ignition.......no go.

Heated up the relay............no go.

battery is 12.78v.

Ran fine last weekend and has been in my garage since. Went to do a little ignition coil troubleshooting tonight and the bugger won't start!!!

Off to dealer so he can figure out this non-starting, misfiring, POS!!!

According to the book, they'll be yanking the motor, though I havn't gone and looked at mine in the garage.

did you have your sled back fire while starting it ??? happend to me and a 07 vector on a trip in minus 40c weather ... what happens is the bolts holding the staarter on get fubar and then the starter wont engage . Only time i couldnt ride my sled guys say that you can get them started by using a rope if the sled is warm ...good luck should be under warrenty ours were ....big big job let the shop do it

Yeah, looks like that sucker is buried up in there pretty good! Glad I have four years worth of warranty. Looks like a real pain to do.

My Nytro didn't start in the fall time. Took it back to the dealer and it ended up being a relay. Your problem doesn't sound like my issue.

Maybe try turning the clutch a bit by hand to change the position of the starter gear. Could be a couple missing teeth allowing the bendix not to grab? Probably unlikely, but easy to try.

No, my sled has never backfired, and I'll give turning the primary a shot.

Was wondering if I'd be able to spin the primary with a rope to fire the ol girl up, but I don't think I'm gonna even attempt that one.

Any shop tech guys know if the starter gear drives a flywheel? Or are they like my raptor in which they spin a one way bearing (which I have had to replace)

I started to read the phazer forum as I remembered they had a bunch of issues with their starters. Not sure if I'm dealing with the same thing here.

Oh well, at least it happened at the beginning of the season and not in February. Better yet - at least it happened in my garage!

3 cheers for extended warranty

From what I understand, these starters are a "clutch type" engagement. You don't have "Energy Conserving" oil in your motor recently, do you? Just a thought...I've heard that, just like with wet clutches on dirt bikes, if you use oil with friction modifiers you will have a problem similar to this.

Keep us updated......

starter

how difficult is it to pull magneto cover off on the nitro.takes 15 mins on my apex, and you can see if you have starter teeth or starter gear teeth damage.I wouldnt recomend turning engine over by hand and trying to start because if you do have broken teeth off gears, those broken pieces will stick to the manet-o and cause further damage
This happened to my riding bud on the last trip out west last spring.I am a welder so i welded some new teeth to the starter, and gear, ground down to mesh, and we rode another 3 days.Stator, magneto, starter and starter gear were all nfg by the time it was said and done(very costly)
good luck D

Man, this whole oil debate gets more interesting by the day. I had thought in another post that we had established a need for the friction modifiers. It was argued that the new Yamaha synthetic was not good for sleds because it lacked friction modifiers due to it being a multi-use oil (ie lubrication of clutches etc).

I'm so confused. Although for now there isn't much I can do. I changed my oil at the recommended interval and used Amsoil full synthetic. :dunno:

That's what I've been running since 800 kms - Amsoil 0/40.

I'm not 100% sure if it's related to oil type or not.

Called the parts guy and neither the starter nor the coils are backordered - should be back on the snow in a week or two.

Depending on how much work is involved - I might pull the Mag this weekend to take a peek. maybe see if I can see what's going on when I try to crank it over. It's awfully tight in there, might have to remove quite a bit.

Airwolf - have you swapped one on a nytro? how was it? details man, details!!!

Just a shot in the dark here, but I had a similar problem with my sled last season, left me stranded at the trailhead minutes after I rode the sled off the trailer. :o| Turned out to be just the fuel pump, and I believe I'm not the only one on here that had this happen to them. My dealer removed one from a crated Nytro that day, and I was back in business within a couple hours, might want to check into it.
