Hi guys , I have a front mount turbo rx1 with double down pipe with a 2860 turbo . Here is my story though . I start the sled and let it run and I rev it up a bit and I get smoke coming from the exhaust and under the hood ,so I look to see where it is leaking and I have a leak which looks to be oil coming from the back of turbo to my double down pipe bolts too. Is there any type of oil seals inside this Garrett 2860 or is this turbo toast . Thanks for any help

is it gravity oil return or a pump? you might check the pump or for a restriction in the return line. Any restrictions will allow oil out the seals.

No it's gravity feed return . This is a front mount powderlites kit . I think it's the turbo and it needs to be rebuilt as it just happened all of a sudden .i have my other turbo still but it's is a 2560 and the one on sled is a 2860 which I like better so I will get it rebuilt . Thanks for the help

Do ya have a restrictor jet in the inlet side of the turbo? And what size return oil line do ya have . When I first ran my turbo I had a 3/8 return and had oil comin out my down pipe Allen told me to change it out to a min of 1/2 or 5/8 is better . I also bored out the ID of all the fittings to the max and used a 1/2 oil line . Prob solved .. Also the shaft seals on the GT2860RS are basicly a tiny piston ring and are very forgivin .Unless ya got a ton of hrs on it yu should be good

If after all your investigating you find the turbo actually does need to be fixed you can do it yourself. You would need to disable the turbo housing and install a new CHRA (center housing rotating assembly I think). They arent cheap and you cant just get them anywhere unfortunately. Powerlites, I would expect would be able to sell them.

Thanks guys for the help . Yes I have a restrictor jet in the line going to the turbo . My return line is 3/8 and I will change that out for this year . But I also think its time for the turbo to be rebuilt . I bought this turbo used so I don't know the miles on it . I have had it on my sled for a couple years now . Why would I need to change the chra , can't I just rebuild it with new seals . Might just take it off and send to Dave at powderlites .

I thought I could just reseal mine as well but after talking with Justin at Full Power Performance he told me the entire CHRA needed to be swapped out. The old one gets sent in as a core and Garrett likely rebuilds them to resell. I got my new CHRA and swapped it out, was an easy change.

Just a quick question , can I take the centre section off the sled without unbolting the turbo from the header . This would be a lot easier . Can i just take the snap ring off and it will come out from there . Thanks for the replies

Wonder if I should just upgrade the centre section to one of those garrett Gtx 2860 . Would if make a big difference from what I have now . Thank you for the replies

verify it is truely a genuine Garrett 2860 and not a Chinese knockoff. If it is, then you can use your old exhaust housing on the GTX series since it doesn't come with one.
It comes with a new center section and GTX compressor housing that you'll have to adapt to your charge tube.

Mbarring racing , is it a big difference in power compared to the garrett 2860 I have now . Mine is a true garrett turbo not the cheap ones . Thank you
