@abj:
I use a YJ/91 (very similar) for snow plowing.
And yeah, you're right that they don't like to go in snow.... which is why I took out the back seat and built a wooden box and filled it with ROCKS. Now it goes even withOUT the chains! WITH the chains, it's unstoppable.

My wheel base is 10in shorter than the YJ's! Now combine that with mud tires and a stickshift.... makes things interesting in the snow to say the least!

Did they even make any of those in autoschmaddik? I kinda don't see the point of such an oxymoron. And yeah, I've got the best kind of mud tires... BALD
If you want a bare bones beat the crap out of it wannabe simulated military truck, it is SUPPOSED to be manual... if it isn't, then you're just a poser fag.
IMO: manual is *WAY* better/easier in terrible conditions. When overshifted, it is real easy to control the wheel torque. Not like stupid automatics that will suddenly shift and try to spin out on you.

I won't ever buy a car with an automatic again, i've blown up 5 automatic transmissions in different vehicles in the past 10 years or so.

All you non-mountain guys crack me up! Les Schwab has tire chains that are in my opinion the absolute best on the market. They are extremely well made and install in less than 5 minutes. Check out: http://www.lesschwab.com/videos_chains.asp
In the western states, if you don't have a set of good chains........ your not snowmobiling during certain times of the year. Because we need to travel long distances sometimes to get to the mountain (and don't want to travel 5 MPH) you need to have a good fitting and strong chain. I can easily travel 35-40 MPH in complete snow cover. I have put alot of miles on my chains with no problems, and they com in really handy if you get in trouble.
On a recwent trip up Mt. Baker, it would have been impossible to go snowmobiling without the chains. The snow was so compressed and so slippery and the access road is a one lane steep and windy road with switch backs. 4-wheel drive and a trailer........ no way would I have ridden without the chains in my rig.
Just so you don't think I am a west coast idiot with no clue about other areas, I grew up in New Hampshire....... never used chains there........ SALT BABY SALT...........

yah, that is what I was thinking.... Though, knowing the area, it was because there was a mile of gravel after the section of snow he was talking about.abj87 said:vmax4 why didnt you just drive you sled up the road if its snow covered?

Sorry been off sledding. Reason you couldn't ride was it was like an ice rink. West coast snow compresses to ice at times, and there was about 3 miles of this super slick condition. People that tried to park lower and ride were overheating and welding sliders to the track clips. Even with scratchers, it was a no go. So chains on and you drive up to the snow line. Slippery yes, scary yes, do-able without chains no. $85 and you have piece of mind and really easy on off capability of the chains. Wouldn't go in the mountains without them.......
