Its here guys!....Huntsville region in Central Ontario is getting POUNDED with lake effect snow off georgian bay!....looking awesome with well over 1.5 feet so far and more to come!

Its coming, trails are opening in quebec and the snow that is here is staying on the ground. Don't forget that cold is better first, then snow. All that snow just insulates and takes forever for lakes to freeze.

I've actually found the opposite to be true for lake freezing. Ground/mud freezing I completely agree, but with lakes, the weight of the snow pushes the ice down and allows water to soak up into the snow creating slush, and before you know it, that slush has frozen. Ice itself will insulate the water below from freezing, but if you're lucky, capillary action will cause the water below to suck right up to the surface of the snow, providing several inches of new ice overnight.
Yes, slush formed ice is not as strong as regular formed ice, BUT, it forms so much faster that it doesn't matter.
