Hey guys, new to the 4 stroke forum but used to be a 2 stroke SRX guy on the original TY site a couple years ago. Anyways i sold my Rev tonight because i'm sick or wrenching on it before, during and after every damn ride. Time for a 4 stroke.
I'm looking at picking up a 2003-04 RX1 now and dont know anything about them other than they look hot and must be a reliable machine. Can some of you gurus update me on the common issues with these machines and what in specific to look for when going over one?
Any feedback and info would be appreciated. I plan on going to look at one this friday if everything works out for me.
Thanks!

Congrats on the decision.
I'm no guru, especially regarding the RX-1. However I know a few things about the sled. I am not sure if an 03-04 would be the best way to go. Those both had the proactive skid (if i am not mistaken) which was never impressive. You would want the one with the Monoshock skid; much better ride (05 I think). They also changed the seat at some point. The first gen had a really low seat that provided little padding and a very low riding position, especially compared to a rev. Later (04+) models have a thicker seat, still no where near rider forward but an improvement. They also changed the front suspension geometry (to reduce ski lift) and did a few things to shave substantial weight (approx 30lbs or so) such as making the chain-case out of magnesium. Ideally you should look for one that someone has put an aftermarket suspension such as an M-10 in, adapted an apex seat (more rider forward), and put aftermarket skis on. Best of luck!

I love RX's but apexs are almost in the same price range now and you would be miles ahead starting with a apex.
If your dead set on the RX here is my list of complaints all of which can be remedied with time and money
#1 seat stinks any year, a must upgrade is a apex seat and 2-4" bar risor (can go 2" on stock cables)
#2 rear suspension is 75lbs and stinks, on a budget swap out a polaris edge or rev suspension, otherwise go aftermarket my favorite is the ZX2
#3 handling is very poor on 03's some what better on 04's (due to change to straight rate springs). Plan on a spring and revalve for the front suspension, a 13mm sway bar if you like to turn tight twisty trails, and some sort of ski upgrade. You can add dartless to stock skis and see if you like that or go to a aftermarket ski.
#4 Carbs can be lightening responsive but have them synchronized at a dealer every couple years. Plan on cleaning the carbs once a year as well.
#5 I have cold hands sitting in a office so I needed the yamaheater for HOT grips
These mods made for one fun sled when I had my RX back in the day. I still loved having a hood to, you lose that with a apex.
Good luck

03-04 had same suspension as your srx, just long traveled, so all the wear points are the same. some of the 03's burned a bit of oil. 03 track suked for anything but trail riding. 04 swaybar was better than 03 but a 12 or 13mm swaybar made a huge improvement. check the exh donuts as they are a known problem at 5-6000miles on average. check the a arm bushings as they wear fast when they are ridden hard (already did mine and only have 3000mi). ski shim takes care of darting untill skis are worn out, the aftermarket skis already do this.
otherwise just look at the general condition of the sled. the motors tend to last forever barring a fluke problem.
