Well roy i am glad its not just me that feels this way, after having my worst sled in over 35 years last year (confusion) at least one thing i did get used to was the speedo was so darn accurate, there analog was the most accurate, going down a rr bed at a regestered 100 analog the max gps was 100 right on the money, now if i switched to digital speed, and i spun it up fast with a lot og track spin it would take the max speed it regestered and lock it in,so after a couple runs and comparing to gps you new this could be off as much as 6-7 but with that in mind and taking off slowley it was dead on too the gps,i know i am ranting but,how come cat and now poo have some very accurate gages and yammi still eludes everyone into believing they have a very good speedo when they themselves addmitt its way off and they are ok with it. Point at AMshootout on the lake last year all three sleds fusion,rx1 and f-7 were w/in 1 mph and yammi speedo read 122 when it ran 120+ how imbarreson is this when we try and talk up our new snow rocket!!!!!RoyT said:LOL... since we're on the speedo accuracy topic (again!), here's my two cents worth, taken from this thread in March:

Why O why O why O WHY can't (won't???) Yamaha calibrate their sleds' speedometers accurately – at LEAST within 1 or 2%??? Is that asking too much in this day and age... the 21st century... the computer age... Yamaha being the high-tech, top of the crop fit and finish company that it is??? Electric start, reverse, EFI, electronically controlled shocks, fancy gauge clusters, clocks... and speedometers that have typically been off by as much as 10-16%???
PLEASE Yamaha, do the right thing and have your engineers take the extra few minutes it'd take to calibrate your sleds' speedos accurately!
(This is NOT a bash, just something that's bugged me concerning ALL brands, and now that Cat FINALLY has very accurate speedos, it's about time everyone else has upped the ante on the accuracy of their speedos too!) – Roy

Sled Dog said:Its so your warranty runs out quicker and to make you think your sled is faster than it actually is. Win win situation for Yamaha one your mileage is going to end sooner if your speedo is out 10% you just lost 10% of your warranty for mileage. Two is the mouth to mouth sales pitch in how fast the sled is at the gas station or restaurant or warmup shack.
Here is the twist Sled Dog, the mielage is ACCURATE, while the Speedometer reads high!! I have ridden all day with my GPS. At the end of the day the mileage is very close between the sled and the GPS, but the Sled speedo reads 10% higher all day long. Not only that, but the odometer is also right on with all of the other sleds in the group (within a mile usually) on a 200 mile day.

Just a thought
Extremely. I use mine in my car as well as on the sled. In the car it is right on. On the sled, not so much.

The newer GPS units are spot on. I don't remember the cut off but the older ones (more than a couple years I think) are still very close to perfect but not exact like the newer ones. Maybe someone here can help me out with exact numbers.

thanks for finding that pic. Is it easy to get at? it's below the secondary clutch correct?HAMMER said:Already cut two teeth out of my Apex speedo gear… 0-miles… Now I'll be slower and get worse gas mileage but the warranty will last longer… Here's a pic BA APEX that was posted a couple years ago on TY… Don't know who to give the credit…
thanks,
BA
Yep, super easy, 14mm, on-off, done.Is it easy to get at? it's below the secondary clutch correct?

OK I'm confused. This gear still works properly after you grind off two teeth? I have never looked in there but that doesn't seem feesible. Could someone please explain this?
Thanks,
Chris

It's not a gear, it is simply something for the speedo sensor to pick up as it spins.

One 14mm nut on and off sounds pretty easy. A picture would be helpful. I guess it's not that important since I am mounting a GPS but I'd rather it be accurate, and if its that easy I may do the grinding. Any cons to think of?

I would question is the odometer will read correctly or be off not reading enough the same amount as corrected for the speedo. Maybe someone that has done this mod can confirm this and report.actionjack said:Any cons to think of?
