Squealing, burning belt...

the belt is squealing, only at idle, and it seems to be smoking a bit as well. after you come to a stop, you can see and smell a little smoke. i can hear and see/smell it squealing and burning on the front pully. that's wwhere it seems to be coming from.

a little background, last year i burned up the stock belt by trying to load the machine with the parking brake on... :o| genious... i know. so i went to the local dealer and got a new one and put it on.

this is the first time i've ridden it this year with the new belt. so, this machine only has 25 miles on it, and on it's 2nd belt (my fault). did i put it on wrong? or is it possible they gave me the wrong belt? thanks guys...
 

oh... i was reading another thread about belt mileage. there was a post in there about new belts squealing until they "seat" themselves after a while. you don't think that's all it might be? a new belt?

It may wear in my first one did, but the next new one I had to remove the washers, it only take 5 minites, also if you burned a belt clean the pullys with thinner to remove any rubber. after the belts wear in you can replase the washers, its no big deal.if your is smoking I would remove the washers, no 2 belts will be the same size, also there is a arrow on there make sure thats faceing the front of the sled, when you looking down on it.
 
ok. is it the front pully or the back one? forgive me, i'm a rookie when it comes to sleds. also, would it hurt anything if i let it go for a while to see if it wears in? or do you think it might wear it out and break? there doesn't seem to be any rubber on the pullys from the burnt belt. i still keep that one as a spare. it just has a flat spot on it, but it still worked. thanks for all the help guys.

The pully on the front of the sled is the primary clutch and the pully on the back is the secondery. If you have a flat spot on the belt, clean both the primary and the secondary with laquer thinner, even if you cant see any thing. Then if its still is making noise after 80 miles , then pull the secodary and there are three bolts on the back 8 mm take them out and remove the washers, save them for when the belt wears in better. I have a service manuel that will help you with this stuff if your intrested send me a privite message.
 
ok, thanks a lot. so for now, i'll just run it for a little while longer and see if it wears in. if not, i'll remove those washers.

Yes but if its smoking or smell burning ,I would remove them right away , also dont forget to clean the pullys
 
Also, try a different belt, see if it's any better. You should have spare, if not, get one. The more important measurement is the edge of the belt to the edge of the secondary, check your owner manual for proper positioning and follow Storm-chaser's advice.
 
Correct ,Storm Chaser has you covered. The belt might squeek some but it should not smell and be burning. The Primary will likely have much more rubber on it then the secondary as it is moving at idle while the belt stays still. The secondary only moves with the belt. How long was it burning for. If it was a long time I would recommend replacing it.

Many of us try to move our sleds with the brake on as well as moving them before un-freezing them from the ground. Once or twice shouldn't hurt.
 
well the one i burned was the one that came from the factory, which has since been demoted to "spare". this new one, the sqealing one, is brand new. the first time i rode it, with the new belt, was sunday. before that, i'd started the machine 2 or 3 times just to keep it running while we didn't have any snow. but the thing is, it never squealed or smoked then. only since sunday, and that was before i rode the machine at all. all i did was take it off the trailer and rode it 30 ft onto the yard. it sat there for about 5 minutes warming up, and then it started acting up. kinda strange... the machine is brand new, we only put 15 miles on it last year (old belt) and put another 9 miles on it on sunday. so it's only got 24 miles total. i replaced the belt after the parking brake incident which was the last time it was ridden last year. so essentially, this new belt is as new as you can get. only it was put on last winter. i'm gonna try the spacer thing this weekend and see if it helps.
 
well i took it for a ride yesterday, without pulling the washers or doing anything to it. i just wanted to see if it would still do it. no squealing, no smoking... no nothing. it seems fine now...
