2014 LTX NA with 10,500 miles. EVO 2.5 flash 9k ago. Started grinding last week, turned the crank about 30 degree and then started. Did this for 2 days on a trip. Last time trying to start it didn’t even grind, just heard the shaft spinning. Can’t say what caused it yet. I’ll tear it apart in the next few weeks and post what I find.

I'm betting the nose cone broke off of the starter.
That was what happened to the one I replaced on a member's sled.

Thats what happened to mine also last season. Nose cone broken. Luckily the last time that old starter worked I just happened to be loading my sled on the trailer and from there it went to the dealer. I was thankful it didn't break in a deep valley in the woods.
I've seen crazy videos of that happening. Haha. After the new starter and most importantly the new updated Flash my sled has never started so well hot or cold

But if he turned the crank to get engagement it would make sense to me that its the gear that has broken out. Maybe both.
Update: Removed the stator cover and found the idle gear has three teeth missing, no where to be found. Starter gear is ground down pretty good. The stator and wheel housing looks like it took a beating. I didn’t pull the motor out, just the side cover.
So where do I look for the missing teeth? Anyone out there ever find them?

They are in oil pan. The big ones. Small are in pump and bearings. Call Yamaha.
Almost ready to pull my motor and need some thoughts.
Questions:
Is the stator wheel bolt left hand thread?
Is there a way to lock the motor to remove the stator wheel bolt, I already removed the clutch.
What is the best way to hoist the motor out. Strap around the bottom of the oil pan, or use the engine mount holes, or two guys can man handle it out? Some other way?

Stator bolt is 95ftlbs I believe. Right hand thread. Just use a Impact and hold flywheel with gloved hand to keep it from turning. Make sure its going right way.Almost ready to pull my motor and need some thoughts.

Best way to hoist motor out is to the mounts and dont drop it!

Do you need to fully remove motor? Would think pan and pump could be removed in sled or just by removing rear mount bolts and tilting.

Agree with Cannondale27, it can be done without pulling the engine.

Don't know why Yamaha didn't put a kickback gear clutch in these right from the start. Would have saved so much grief.

Starter housing on my 2014 Viper also broke. I caught it right away so there was not that much damage, would still start and run but it did wreck my stator and flywheel. I replaced everything including the one way bearing. I think that most of the broken starter gear got caught up in the flywheel magnets. So I guess what my question is, wouldn't the filter screen on the oil pump and oil filter it self stop the small pcs of metal before it sends the oil back through the motor. If not at this point the damage is done and I don't think Yamaha will do anything about it seeing i did the work myself and the machine has hurrican turbo installed. Maybe I should keep my eye's peeled for another motor

This is why the RIGHT way to fix is remove engine and start inspecting everything. Page 2 has picsStarter housing on my 2014 Viper also broke.
