Starter kicks out before engine starts

My starter on the VK pro kicks out before the engine starts. Has anyone else had this problem and if so any suggestions. I can't even find where the starter is to have a look at it. It looks like it would be under the battery but not sure.
Any help would be appreciated.

Most starting problems are related to the battery. The first thing I'd do would be to hook a charger or booster to the battery and see if that solves the problem. My machine starts night and day differently when the battery has an average charge compared to when it has a fresh, complete charge. A battery modification is in my sled's near future.

I tested the battery and it shows 12.4 which isn't that bad but I did try a boast and the machins started right away. So that may be the problem allright. It has been very warm here for the last couple of weeks so I would like to see if I get the same result if it is say -30c or colder.
