Starter motor, or starter gear shot?

I think it is like what you just described. I sent Grizz a PM, and he said to jump the starter relay and see if it will start. Going to try this. My brother already had to replace his starter relay, cost him like 80-90 dollars from what I remember. The hum I am hearing is more quite, than the starter spinning, it is like what you just said. So you had to replace you starter relay, and starter motor, as the was the problem with you sled?

Yes a bad relay led to the starter seizing up. That's how I came up with my idea of a LED light with the + coming off of the starter side of the relay. If the light stays on after you start it then you know the relay is stuck open. Thank God it was all done under warranty.

On the 08 Vector I purchased used the starter was replaced. The dealer/mechanic (one man shop) said that the oil seal failed and filled the starter with oil.

That's a first!! WOW!

You will likely need one way clutch, ring gear, starter and the idler gear between the starter and ring gear. When one way slips and then grabs it shears teeth off starter and idler gear. Just pulled one apart this week. Have to undo rear motor mount and rock motor forward to get stator cover off and pull flywheel.

Because it's so much work to replace one way clutch you should always replace ring gear and one way as a set. The boss on ring gear will have wear from the slippage. Tolerance between the two pieces is critical.

Oh, yup. That does stink. So you recommend buying a new starter motor, starter relay, one way bearing, new gears( parts #8FA-15515-00-00, and 8ES-15512-01-00)?

Nice!! I bet the light would have been on in my case. I guess, I will have to open it up, to see what is wrong with it. And go from there on what parts I need. Going to try jumping the starter relay first, but I doubt that is it.

I purchased and installed a new starter relay this fall, just as a precaution. I believe someone, maybe the yamaheater guy, used to make a light kit just as 4stroke has described.

Grizz talked about his 1X on this forum. It's different than my idea....I don't remember what specifically.

Do you guys have a link the shop manual for these sleds? Mine is an 08 vector, I do not know if it matters what manual, but I would like to download it to my computer, so when I start tearing into this thing, I know what I am doing. Thanks guys. So how many miles do you recommend replacing the starter relay?

Never mind, I got the PDF shop manual. Going to start the tear down soon on this. Will be posting pics.

On picture 6th, is of the cover I have to pull off right? This is how far I got tonight on it. Do I have to flip the motor up, as every one says? Also, if I do I know I have to take the oil tank off, drain the oil. But what about the headers on the exhaust system? I have taken the clamps off, loosed the hangers up, is that enough to flip the motor up? Or do I have to take the headers off? And what part of the steering do I have to take off, if I have to flip the motor up to get to the starter? Hoping you all can help me with the questions. Thanks. Hoping to do some more work on it tomorrow.

I am wondering if I do need to flip the motor up, or can I get to the starter from black plastic plate that you have to take off to change the oil? Again I am new at this, going to need some help on what to take off, to get to the starter. And all the other good stuff, that I have to check/replace.

Disconnect the exhaust. There are two rear motor mount bolts that need to be removed so you can tilt the motor forward to get the starter out.
Ok, you are talking the headers from the engine? And the motor tilts forward to the front bumper, Vs the front of the motor coming up, and tilting to the rear of the sled? Again, I am a newbie for working on the starter. So you got to put up with me. Thanks for the info so far Steiner!!
