I was out for a ride this passt week on my 07 Phazer FX which I have owned from new. When I stopped to wait for the other guys to catch up, I shut off my sled. When I started it up after they caught up, it seemed like it was turning over slower than normal. When we got back to where we had all met up in the morning, I shut my sled off and decided to give it another try and see how it sounded. It turned over even slower than the last time so I said my good-byes and buggered off for home. I kind of figured the battery was getting bad so picked up a new Yuasa ytx14h-bs. Filled the battery, charged it, and put it in the sled. Dammit! still turns over slow although not as bad as it was out on the trail.
Any ideas on why it is turning over slowly? Could the starter be failing? I never did get around to loctiting the bolts on it. I was going to do that the next time I had it apart for an oil change.
Thanks in advance,
Bruce

Probly the starter starting to twist and jamming up, i would get it apart ASAP before running it anymore. There is a bearing in there the starter runs on , could be goin?

Yep, sounds like the starter has loosened and is out of alignment. Not a hard job, just time consuming.

Yep, common problem with the early models.

The bolts that hold the starter together tend to get loose and the body of the starter gets out of alignment, preventing it from spinning. Fix is to take it out, remove ONE BOLT AT A TIME, put some red Loctite, put the bolt back in and do the other bolt. If the bolts are already loose, you should see the alignment marks and the green line on the starter to get them back together. Bench test the starter before re-installing it to be sure the alignment is right.
You're lucky you weren't stranded and had to pull start it like this:

You have to pull the front end off, right? Mine was a PITA even when i had the front end off. Hope i got it good.
I would pull the front end but at dealer they just lifted the motor on one I saw them do somehow.Front end off is sure thing though so I would do that and make sure you inspect all the wires going to it also.

You can get at, look over, and re-do so much stuff, so much better with the front end off. I will be doing it again next year if i still have it, just for ease of maintenance and a piece of mind.

I just cut off the piece of casting. Came out no problem. Serves no real purpose anyway except maybe keep it stable on a workbench.

Thanks for the replies. I am away at work til Thursday but will have to get at this once I get home next week. Probably a good time for a quick tear down to make sure all of the boost lines and exhaust wrap is intact for my MCExpress turbo anyways.
It sucks that I just did an oil change a month ago but didn't need to do the filter so never tore it down at all. Just the belly pan to drop the engine oil and drained the oil tank. Oh well, might as well throw a new filter on while I am in there and a fresh oil change again!

most guys who seem to have starter problems have 07s I am thinking about doing this fix but we finally got snow and don't want to loose any time due to the unexpected I have an 08 that I bought new in 09 so I think I'll check with dealer to see if he knows if it was done. Was this an actual recall.

No, it wasn't a recall or even a tech bulletin. People brought them in on warranty at the time and they fixed it so word just got around. Now it's a DIY preventive procedure. If you cheat and cut off that tab that's in the way, it's shouldn't take you more than an hour or so. Oh, and you might as well do an oil change since most of the oil will come out from the starter hole. I found that out the hard way.

Did you just dremel off the tab or what did you use to cut it off?

I used a reciprocating saw but I accidentally damaged the little rubber cover on the starter's positive cable. A Dremel may be a bit small. A cutoff wheel on a die grinder would work or an angle grinder with a 4 or 5 inch wheel.

Dremel wouldn't work. Kept breaking the little cut-off discs. Tore the whole front of the sled off, about the 5th time I've done it and pulled the starter out. It was rotated at least an inch off of the marks. loosened the bolts, lined up the marks, then loctited the bolts. Put everything back together. All told it took me about 5 hours.
