I just took my 07 Phazer to the shop, they replaced the plugs (since I didn't want to take off the gas tank)...the real amzing part is they took off the starter and didn't remove the front clip...
I have the starter in a bag, there is oil everywhere, and there is absolutely no evidence of the front clip coming off...
So....my questions are these:
1. Can I re-install the starter through the frame? (it appears I easily can)
2. Which wire connects to which terminal on the starter?
(I didn't take the starter off, so I have no idea how to reconnect it)
I read the other threads in the forum and even replied with a couple of questions about the starter replacement and learned to Loctite the starter bolts before I reinstall...so I have that going for me...
Can anyone shed some light on the above 2 questions? Especially #2
Thanks!!

I got the answer from cannondale27 thanks a million!
Big red one goes to the copper colored post and the other black one goes to one of the starter mounting bolts

I am waiting on my starter to come in the mail...as soon as I get it I am going to take some pictures of putting it back in...I am going to try it through the frame and see what happens...at the very worst I won't be able to squeeze it in there ad I'll have to take off the front clip as described in one of the other posts.. http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php? ... ht=starter in case anyone missed it..
If anyone has ever tried this and has any tips let me know...

I'm sure this is common knowledge, but since you didn't remove the starter... be sure to fill the sled up with oil once you have re-installed the starter! I'm pretty sure that when starter is removed the oil in the crankcase drains right out the opening...

That is correct.
Don't quote me on this, but I thought Cannondale said you had to cut something out of the way to get the starter out without removing the front end. I just pulled my front end to do the starter. I should have looked to see if it was possible or what it would take without pulling it. Either way. it seems like it would be way too much of a pain to get it out and reinstall it with the front end on.
I have heard you can also remove it by tilting the motor itself.Never did it myself. There is also a way to do it by trimming some of the casting off the motor.Other than that I dont believe there is any other way to fish it out of there.Wouldnt hurt to try though.
The crazy thing is that it is already out....the starter is completely out...the oil drained out just as you described, and thanks for the reminder to fill it back up
There is absolutely no evidence of the front end being removed nor the engine even moved one bit...the skid plate underneath is removed as well as the lower plastic panel so I can see up under there where the starter needs to be put back in...I can see the wires to connect it ad I think I can fit it in there....my starter is in two pieces (the one the mechanic took out) maybe he undid the bolts, took it apart into two pieces, then took it out piece by piece?
I am going to try to see if it fits back in...I might run out to the garage and see if the old one fits into the frame at least...

Hmm maybe ask them how they got it out.I am sure the techs know the easiest way since they get lots of practice.

Maybe they did take it out in 2 pieces...I tried my best to get mine out, contorting myself and the starter in all sorts of shapes...ground down the tab on the engine, but still no joy. I finally ended up just re-indexing and locktite-ing while it was still stuck inside the frame, then bolting it back up.
I could not figure out how the get it out...but then my brain just doesn't do rope knots well either

Thanks guys for the replies...
The tech admitted this was the first Phazer (New Model 0' or newer) he had ever worked on....I was a little nervous about that and that is why I have it back in my garage instead of paying that guy $70/hour when I can pay myself $70/hour to learn how to do it
I also took that as a good sign of the reliability of the 4-stroke phazer, that it has been out for 3 years and this tech hadn't even worked on one.
I am pretty sure the only way to get the starter in and out is in two pieces through the frame. I got each piece in there easily as long as the starter was in 2 pieces...I DO NOT recommend taking the starter apart to install it...In fact DON'T DO IT........The magnets will come loose from their seats and then you are in a such a hornets nest of wires and magnets you will never get it back together properly...trust me...don't even try it...
The starter I was trying to put back in is already bad, and it was already in 2 pieces so I might as well see what I can do with it. My experience will hopefully help someone else out in the future.
I out the starter back together (non-functional because of the hornet's nest as described above) just to see if I could fit it in through the frame...no luck
Ricketts description of "contorting himself and the starter into all sorts of shapes" I did as well with the same result. I could not get the starter back into the belly past the frame.
So I am back to my original plan unfortunately of removing the front clip as in the post I mentioned at the beginning of this thread..

Removing the front end is actually pretty easy. Its just a little time consuming.

grind down the engine tab and twist the starter,it will come out without removing the front clip

Is there a "safe" mileage? Or is my starter going to fail sooner or later? I have a bit over 3000 miles on my 07 FX. Mike.

Mine failed with just over 2000 miles. If I were you, I would pull it out and loc-tite the starter bolts just to be safe. Judging by all the failures on the board, your starter will fail sooner or later.

Checked mine just then. Looks good. I can see if you ground off the lower tab on the engine thats there for nothing to bolt on to, it could come out with some yoga action.
