Well my 05 Vector died last ride of the season dropped in new battery and watched the volt meter fall from 12.8 down into the 11's with it running at about 2000 Rpm didn't really want to rev higher (ran like crap). :o| :o|

Hasn't had the chain tensioner done either. both of these are beyond my comfort zone. I'm fine with pulling apart suspensions, clutches, carbsrecoils, etc.

But not going in deeper then that.

So it's going to a dealer.

The question is what range is that going to run all in?

What else should I have them do while it's all torn to pieces?

Heard good things about a dealer in maine but that's a 3 hr ride
Anybody in Mass good at this, Culley's? CE yamaha?

My biggest fear is getting ripped off by someone not doing the work correctly.

Feel like this money wise :exc:

My Yamaha Dealer stated an estimate of $800 for the tensioner replacement and I think the tensioner is about $100. They took the engine out of my sled to do this. Mine was replaced under warranty at the time but, I don't think Yamaha is doing tensioner warranty now. If the stator has to be replaced along with the tensioner, this would be a good time to have it done. Also, ask the dealer to check the hot wire to the starter. Mine was rubbing on the engine and was almost worn through.

I should still have a stator, if I still have it it had 500mls on it. I'll check tomorrow.

i don't know why they would pull the engine to replace the tensioner, it's not necessary. shame you don't live close to jersey i'd knock that work out cheaper than a dealer. not to ruffle any feathers but $800 for that job is imho very pricey. if they're into it for the tensioner exhaust doughnuts might be a good idea. the tensioner is around $100, a new stator is around $240 from online vendors.

I have read in posts here on Totallyamaha that you can also roll the engine forward by removing the upper engine bolt mount. And, I agree with you that exhaust donuts would be a good idea at that time. Without getting into what you would charge, how do you install a new tensioner and a new stator?

Fran (grizztracks) has done a very comprehensive explanation of the cam chain tensioner complete with pictures and steps of the procedure. it's a sticky at the top of this forum. i've never changed a stator on a sled but it's located under the right side cover of the engine. off the top of my head you'd have to drain the oil, pull the oil tank, get the engine to where you can cut all the mounts loose so you can jockey it around to get the cover off. the steering shaft might be in the way as well. the tensioner, exhaust doughnuts and stator would best be done at the same time as they all involve work that overlaps.

i did read that very informative!

still don't want to do it myseelf though.

i pulled one out of my Chapparal Firebird once but that was a few decades ago...

Anything new is very complicted to work on.

take my wifes car, new plugs require REMOVING the intake manifold and it's a regular rear wheel drive SUV not even a little front driver squash box.

you don,t have to remove engine to do either , i just did the tensioner , thanks to grizztracks on my wifes 05 vector , it took awhile motor will tilt up , you would have to move steering shaft to change stator its not that hard to do just takes time

Thanks jamesc and everyone else on this topic. You just have to read everything here to stay up to date with information you would never hear about on the trail.

Ok for stator and cam tensioner I've been quoted 1400 in the people's republic of mass. I was told the tensioner isn't too bad you can roll the motor forward as outlined on here.

but Yamaha recommends pulling the motor for the stator can anyone confirm???

can't confirm that you don't have to pull the engine for the stator but definitely not for the tensioner. i glanced at my brothers 06 and i think you might be able to sneak that cover off for the stator if you were creative. years of working as a flat rate mechanic can make you pretty crafty. being a mechanic the prices people are quoted always seem shocking. i realize a business needs to make money but you can buy the all the parts for that job online for around $375 delivered so if this is a dealership they're paying even less. personally i think a grand in labor is out of line but that's just my opinion. wish you were closer i'd be doing that job for a lot less than $1400

hope my comments don't offend anyone.

You do not have to pull the motor to replace the stator on an 05' vector. Some dealers are going by the newer model job info. I caught my dealer giving me the wrong guote for an 05'. It should be around $350.00 installed!

Well at the dealer now will let you knowwhen I get it back in a couple weeks
