Hey guys, trying to remove the steering post to change airbox, having troubles getting the linkage arm off the bottom of the steering post. Removed the nut with safety pin and it will not release. Do you need a a special ball joint fork to get it apart? I tried leaving the nut on and hit it with a hammer with no luck.

Thread a nut on flush with end of stud and give it wack with a hammer. It's a taper fit so just needs a little force to free it up.

Whooa! Go easy.......Putting an oft relocate on a few years ago I did exactly what was written above and it did not work out in my favour. Tore the threads off the tie rod and made a mess of things.
Heat it up with a heat gun, use a pickle fork, small pry bar, or big slotted screw driver. When its screaming hot, get the driver in behind the ball join and pry down. Then tap on the nut. Don't wack it.
It should just fall out of place.
Hope that helps. this is coming from a guy who f'ed a perfectly good weekend of riding because of that pressure fitting.

I had an old wrench laying around and I just ground the fork end down a little bit and made my own ball joint tool. Worked great and didn't need to hit anything with a hammer.

That's an awesome idea! I used a pickle fork but it was a little too big. I will use your method next time.

Yeah I saw it on some automotive forum somewhere and figured I'd give it a try and it seems to work pretty good. Plus I can still use the wrench. That's an awesome idea! I used a pickle fork but it was a little too big. I will use your method next time.
