for guys looking for ring free in quebec....this is an alternative....its a motorcraft product/ford product...
its pm-2 and pm-3.....its carbon cleaning the 2 is in a spray can and 3 in non spray can......ford has a tsb for using it to clean carbon from combustion chambers....I'v used both before in on vehicles following a Ford Tech service bulliten for carbon knock on explorers and other fords. Also used it to clean carbon from throttle bodies..
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ ... eid=213787
this web page and on the #2 search by factory number put in pm-2 and or pm-3.......your ford dealer should have it....
I was a tech at ford for 8 years and this stuff works...
Since I haven't had a bottle of ring free in my hand I'm guessing that this stuff must be real close... I have used before and it works. I'm going to try it.....my sled is munching oil and its 500 for parts to open the motor up and do it right....the can cost $5.00 so I think it worth a shot and my sled is a perfect test example because its consuming 1 quart for every 150 miles.
hope this helps

I am also a auto tech and also have a 1994 Ford explorer. I heard about this stuff and would like to try it in both. Let me know your results. I assume you used it in the Fords for the pinging?

So question. How long after engine shutoff should a person wait till you check the oil and if the level is at the E line typically how much oil needs to be added?
10 minutes should be lots and I believe it is 500ml from E to F.

I don't wait, I check it right away. The longer you leave it the more the oil will go down in the resevior. I thought that is the reason you are checking it when you get it nice and hot.

Well the Yammy dealer told me to wait 3-5 mins cause checking it right away will not give u a true reading. However, you shouldn't wait much longer than that becuase this is a dry-sump system all the oil will equalize in both chambers and thus give you a wrong reading... I was asking this question just to make sure.
Thx

I have tried the seafoam but it didn't work. When I first bought my sled I was burning next to no oil and the more km's I put on it the worse it seems to get. When I had 5k on it I was burning around 400mils to 1000km and now that I have 15k on it I am adding oil at each fill up of gas. It's just something you have to get used to when the milage gets up there.
you really need to break-in these motors properly.just like they say in the owners manual. i have a 2004 warrior with 8000 miles and ive put about 2 liters since new. when i broke it in i never exceeded 6000 rpm for the first 200 km. then i rode it to 8000 rpm until i got 500 km. very hard to do cause all you want to do is hammer that throttle.
When my dad bought his RX-1 brand new we took it out and put the first 2 miles on it grass dragging. It had the snot beat out of it from mile one and never burned oil bad even with over 5000 miles. I recently tore the motor down and the rings and ring lands were very clean, no apparant sticking at all and it had over 5500 miles at the time so I'm not so sure that carbon deposits are always the problem.
I got my sled used it already had 2000 miles on it so I don't know how it was broken in, but I beat on it ever since then and it doesn't use much oil either, neither of our sleds have ever had any ringfree or anything like that through them.
Doesn't seem to be much of a pattern as to which sleds use oil and which don't, and I don't think that ring free or seafoam is going to be the end all cure.

I don't think Yamaha will do anything about it unless you have excessive oil useage. This needs to be documented at the dealer and their idea of excessive verses yours is a word apart, Ken.
The service manager at Winnipeg Yamaha says that Yamaha Canada says normal oil use is 1 quart for 800KM (496 miles) if you use 0-30 and 1 quart for every 1000KM (620 miles) if you use 5-30. I think both those numbers are excessive.
I kept very close tabs on my oil consumption this year on my 04 RX. I have close to 3000 miles for the year and have added 1 1/3 quarts. I have no problem with that amount of oil consumption as long as it doesn't get worse.
Is this just an 03 problem or does anyone with 04, 05 have any oil consumption issues. I believe the rings changed in 04.

I don't care what Yamaha says, any oil consumption in excess of 1 qt per 2000 or 3000 miles is excessive. The Yamaha reps are just trying to cover their butts. None of the sport bikes guys I know complain of oil consumption and they beat the hell out of their engines!

I started using 1 quart every 200 miles after 3K. I don't ride excessively hard, but I like to get on the throttle. I called my local dealer who registered it with Yamaha. Yamaha asked me this year to go through their RingFree program. Two tankfuls of RingFree shock treatment, change the oil and 2oz per tankful and run it. It did, I used 22oz per 380 miles this season. The dealer told me that was not good enough and they were not happy with the results. Yamaha told my dealer last year that they stand behind their product 100% as long a I did everything they had asked and I documented everything they would make it right. My sled goes in for new rings this week. I hope everything goes smoothly and I am making the right choice. I will start a new thread and update everyone as to my progress.
