I am willing to accept 1 qt. /1000 miles. Compared to a 2-stroke that uses about 1 qt. to every 125 miles that's pretty good.
But what I will never accept is an OEM's answer to fix a design problem using disposable additives like Ring-free ($12 btl), or Sea-foam ($6 can). I bought a 4-stroke sled so I didn't have to carry all the extra oil and now additives on my trips.
However, I'm not going to hold my breath for a factory recall either.

I was thinking for the hell of it someone with a sled that is using oil should try the Lucas oil conditioner. It makes the oil cling very well and I was wondering if it would reduce or improve the oil burning condition.

I'm not sure if I should be joining this discussion on burning oil, but my 03 burns it, probably kind of middle of the road regarding consumption when I compare all these quantities to miles.
Here's why I'm not sure. I have a gutted can. So there is nothing that is catching the oil in terms of baffles/piping.
But my buddy that rides with me normally was commenting after our last trip that my oil is easy to see where it's going.
His hood showed very small drops of oil all over. Maybe 100 of em. Anyways, it's going straight out the rear as far as I'm concerned.
And I run seafoam regularly. But....I did burn less with seafoam treatment, just not perfect. I will be shocking this year probably a few times with the Ringfree just to try somehting different.
They also say you can run seafoam as an oil treatment. Is this correct, or has anybody tried this?

The tunnel extension on my RX-1 usually gets black dots on it, so I would say that's where some of my oil is going too.
I put Seafoam in the oil right before summer storage. I may also try it this winter with the initial oil change too.
I use almost no oil guys and my tunnel on my o4 gets these little black spots also. On mine at least what it is condensation mixed with some soot getting spit out the back when it is warming up. You guys should seriously try the lucas oil treatment to see if it helps or makes it worse.

You all should read the September '06 issue of Snow Tech.
A reader wrote in about this topic and they told him: "excessive oil consumption was much more of an issue on the '03s and that to fix this problem, Yamaha came out with a revised breather tube that alleviated crankcase pressure so that oil wasnt being forced through the intake and combustion chamber. A slit was added to the crankcase vent tube inside the airbox so incase the vent tube became blocked by ice it wouldnt suck the oil down like the '03s.
This can be done to the '03s as well by simply adding a 20mm slit along the tube length inside the airbox. Think of it as a relief valve."
Not sure if this will fix everyone's problem with oil consumption, but Id say its worth a shot.

Finally this thread is getting some press. I have an update! Yamaha had me go through the motions with the Ring-Free and all and to closely monitor my oil consumption. They told me if I was not completely satisfied with the results, they would give me a full ring job free of charge. I am going to the dealer this week to pickup my 03 with new rings. I can't wait to try it out and see if this was the fix. Yamaha stood behind me and my dealer said that if you follow Yamaha's instructions and still have problems, that would stand behind their product Just a side note, my dealer is local and I purchased my sled in the mid-west. The dealer said they were just doing their job and making the Yamaha customers happy. My personal opinion is, there are a great deal of solutions with oil, cutting the slits and what not, I think the problem is with the rings, period the end. Time will tell.
FYI
Anyone looking for Seafoam in the Timmins area you can buy it at Guiho Saw and Marine sales, 950 Riverside dr Timmins, ON. I plan on trying this product this winter and seeing if it helps with the oil consumption.

Hey guys i thought that we had talked about this oil issue on 03 and 04 rx1s before, they had ring issues, and yammi is aware of it,but back when i had my 03 with the same issues we did leak down, oil consumption charts, the whole ball of wax,and they still did nothing, until 05 than my dealer told me that yammi had come thru on the 03 and 04 rx1 models with oil issues, now they admitted ring problems, and they will replace at no cost to you free rings,so make sure and do a search on here for mo info, but its in here,so go get it,and talk to your dealer about this, you should not have to suffer oil usage of this kind.newrx1guy said:Don't feel bad. After 250 miles my low oil light is on. The dealer is trying to find out why. The sled is a 2003 and is under warranty. I have faith in them. I just keep adding oil. They said some of the oil burning is my riding style. I love to hold it wide open for miles and love every minute of it. Rather add oil than rebuild a 2-stroke

Do you have to have the YES coverage in order to get this ring-job?

It is my understanding that you do not have to have YES, although I did. Maybe some without it that had it done can confirm.
