Looking for your thoughts on this. I’ve read other posts were some have had similar issues but not sure if I have a problem or not.
Was running around Gogebic this weekend. With about 100 miles on for the day and after leaving the radar runs (just watching) I had the sled pop into limp mode with a p0217 code (overheat). I shut it down. Looked at the heat exchanger and it was free of ice, checked the radiator and it was warm. Coolant bottle was good, level right where it always is. No coolant leaks no oil leaks.
Start it back up and my coolant temp is 163-167 but it would periodically (usually when going slower) pop into limp mode, flash the code, red light come on and literally 2 seconds later it goes off and everything was fine. Coolant temp always 163-167 unless stopped then it would creep up into the 170s. It did this at least 10 times in 150 miles usually in a cluster (3-4 times in 10mi stretch). Put the scratchers down and maybe it did it less but still did this a few times with scratchers down so not sure it was making a difference. Coolant temps stayed the same.
Ran a road at one point with minimal snow for 6-7 miles and no problems.
Let it get up to temp for the radiator fans to turn on (190 or so) no problem.
Initial thought was the hard pack cold snow (-4 when we started) wasn’t getting the heat exchanger enough moisture but would have though my coolant temps would have been creeping higher.
Seems like thermostat and water pump are working.
Maybe a bad sensor but then why so intermittently? Did a short ride today (20 miles) but with kids on so going pretty slow and no problems.
Planned on calling the dealer tomorrow to get their thoughts. Have a trip planned this weekend and just don’t know if I need something fixed or not.
It’s a ‘15 Viper xtx with MPI turbo.
Anyone have a thought or similar experience?

My gauge always showed it was hot when it went into limp mode. I believe there is 2 temp sensors one is for fan and other for ECU. Not sure which runs the gauge but bet its your sensor causing the light and limp mode.
My 14 did that several time but at wot and shut down. I changed out the temp sensor and it never did it again. I have video s riding and the hot light was flashing and temp read 210.
Check the wire and connector to the sensor 1st

I wonder since it is happening so fast that it is hitting 210 for a second but by the time I feel the limp mode and look down it’s cleared and back to normal giving me the impression that temp is staying in 160’s. I see a part for the coolant temp sensor, not finding a second sensor yet. It’d be dangerous to have it stutter like this at WOT. That would get your attention.
I’ll check the connection tomorrow make sure it’s clean and tight.

Yes it will throw you over the bars with clutch back shift

Could be there is only one sensor. Thats good. Easier to locate issue then.I wonder since it is happening so fast that it is hitting 210 for a second but by the time I feel the limp mode and look down it’s cleared and back to normal giving me the impression that temp is staying in 160’s. Yes it's the one right above the thermostat housing

Just an update. It was a wire that had rubbed the insulation off that would intermittently short and throw the code.
