This is my 4th season on the winder and still using the 8jp belt. It amazes me that the aftermarket hasn't stepped forward to make a stronger belt for this sled.

I blew the original today at 500 miles while conducting several long pulls. Cut in half like like someone took a saw to it. Clutches were a little warm, but nothing to write home about. The 8jp just doesnt have the tensile strength.

I know the 8dn is stronger, but I prefer the performance of the 8jp. I'd like a steel cable coated with kevlar and rubber. Has anyone found a stronger belt?

Is like that show about Groundhog Day!
Remember those Viper clutches you got sitting on the shelf from before? Might be time to re-visit and give it another go.
This time clutch using the 51-43 helix in them. :sled2:

Haha, step ahead of you.... it's already in the car and will get dropped off at the machine shop tomorrow!! When I tried it a couple seasons ago, the belt went 1250 miles and broke in half as if cut with a saw. Again, at that time, the clutches weren't hot and the belt just broke. I had the same thoughts then as today....the 8jp just isn't strong enough!

I wish the Tcat belt would fit in my winder. That belt is much stronger than the 8jp.

I have had really good luck with the ultimax belt. Ran it hard for 3600km last winter and it held up great. I was running 8JP and 8DN before the ultimax and would get about 900km out of a belt. I also used the hurricane alignment bar before switching to the ultimax belt, so I’m sure that helped also.

What's the down side of adjusting for and running the 8DN belt?
8DNs have proven their strength and durability in high hp Supercharged and Turbo Apexs for years.
Seems to me if you adjust for their extra length and understand they won't shift the clutches out quite as far you should be good to go.
The top speed loss should be minimal and could be recovered with gearing.
What am I missing?

I am really satisfied whit xs825 .. Durable, no dust , rpm are stable even if real hot

they are 1 year warranty In addition...lol

Be careful what you wish for LOL. I have never been able to make a Cat belt last more than about 100 miles. I've tried every belt there is and I put my money on the XS belt from Timken. BTW- whatever you do, don't be tempted by the Gates GForce carbon fiber belt. My buddies and I went through 11 of them in one long weekend (280 tunes and lots of studs). Everyone got pulled in two such as you describe.

Might be cheaper to pay somebody to align your clutches.

You arent missing anything Bob, but to get the 8dn to work required more weight/tension and yielded slower speeds. Yes, the missing mph can be gained back with proper tuning, but I would rather expend efforts picking up and additional 3mph, then make up for a deficit mph. That's just me ....and I'm weird like that.

Nope, that's not the problem. My drive train and clutches are meticulously maintained, adjusted, and lined up using the official Team alignment bar and plug. To my knowledge, no one is using Cat belts (made in China) on their Cat. After I switched to XS have not a single failure.
BTW, I also have an infrared belt temp gage so I can watch belt temps. It was not heat that destroyed the Cat belts as many failed at very cool temps (like 75 -90 degF). One last point, I always break belts in for about 30 miles of easy riding.

Which XS belt..827 or 829? Been using the 827 with a STM secondary with good luck. Wondering what effect the hair shorter 829 may have.

Good to hear. Your last post about blowing belts is misleading.
With the team alignment bar is the belt in perfect alignment at a 1 to 1 ratio?

Carbon fiber is good for applications with continuous load but does not take shock loads well. IMO, Gates missed the target with their carbon fiber for this application.
I can't check alignment at 1:1. The gage is designed to check offset at rest. I do check it with the belt installed because I've noticed a slight difference between checking with belt on vs. off (the belt exerts side load onto secondary sheaves with does make a little difference). In the Team Boss secondary, the outer sheave is stationery so it doesn't move; it's the inner that moves. So checking from the one that doesn't move should be accurate. Belt runs nice and cool.
