I just made the leap and purchased a 2005 RX-1ER, wow, am I happy about that. I'm thinking 96 or 144 studs, down the middle, 1.325 ish according to posts I've seen here. Do you all recommend studding immediately or waiting 500 miles or so to stretch the track?? My folks have a Vector and Rage on the way, will be studding them as well to help deal with Wisconsin icy corners, so we are all staying tuned for your advice!!!

Some folks stud the track immediately, but it wouldn't hurt to wait 500 or so miles. I've always waited.

I studded both the finger track on my 03 RX-1 and the ripsaw on my 04 Warrior right away and had no issues.

Number down the middle
Alrighty, I may stud right away, so 96 or 144 down the middle on a RX-1 ER?? My riding style is pretty conservative, mostly northern Wisconsin, very little lake running. I tried to locate a Supertrax article referred to in a previous post but no luck.

That used to be a annual discussion with my riding group as well until we sat down and figured out just how much a track would actually stretch.
If a 121" track stretches a whole inch, which it probably doesn't, the net effect on each of the 48 areas you're going to stud is .02 inches.
That combined with the thought that early season trails often have a lot of ice and studding is a lot less fun to do in the cold prompted us to do them right away rather than wait. Never had any problems.

Re: Number down the middle
In that supertrax article they used a zr-900 for the testing and if I remember correctly they really liked 96 down the middle. So that's what I tried in my Warrior (which actually is 108 with the 136 inch skid). Hook up is great and so is stopping. Keep in mind I'm comparing this setup to the 192 in the finger track. If I were you, I would go 96, you can always add more.cobalt650 said:so 96 or 144 down the middle on a RX-1 ER?? When you are deciding how many studs to install, what you are really worried about is how much stress is any one stud going to be dealing with? I know the stud manufacturers recommend one per horsepower, but this is a lot like asking your insurance agent if you should carry MORE insurance!! What do you think they will say? That said, I do tend to stick with the one per HP rule, so in this case, that would be 144.

Studs
I studded my 03 RX-1 with 192 and that seemed to work well with that old track, last year I used 162 in my Warrior and I feel that I would have been better off with only 108, it tended to push pretty hard in the packed turns. This year I am starting with 96 down the middle on my 05 RX-1 and the RS Vector, my thought process is that I can always add the extra 48 if I feel the need (I even bought the extras). I have always studded as soon as I get my sled with no real problems, not worth waiting... I also ride mainly northern WI and I'm sure you'll be happy with this new track/sled setup, my main reason for the studs is the same as yours, safety.
Good luck,
Ron M.
