Hey guys first post here and I am looking for some help setting up a set of two speeds for an xtx. First off I did a search and found Turk's initial set up of the black hc spring and a bolt and two weights in the heel. That gave me an engagement of 6600rpm and top speed of 20mph. I added weight. one bolt in heel and one in middle and got 4600rpm engagement and 30mph so I added more weight. bolt and washer in heel and bolt in middle and got 4100rpm engagement and 33mph. primary is not closing to get the secondary to shift out. Should I move the center weight out to the tip? Looking for some advice because this is beating the he!! out of my machine trying all of these little adjustments. I'm not sure why Turk's initial set up is not working. Thanks for any and all replies.

You have to be using a wrong primary spring! You should not be seeing more then 4,000rpm upon engagement with H/C black. Are you sure you have 2 speed, dual pivot weights? Check your secondary for stock settings. How are you getting 20mph top speed? You are not shifting out something is binding or your weights are not installed correctly. Something is seriously wrong here, I would recommend you do not even attempt to run this setup until it's figured out.

The sled hits the rev limiter at 20mph.I am using the black spring that came in the kit. The kit came with a red and black spring. The weights are the two speeds. The shoulder pivots as the mass rotates. The secondary has never been taken apart. I bought the machine new so I know that it is stock. When I installed the kit, I made sure nothing was binding as the instructions stated to do. I'm not sure how they could be installed incorrectly. Is there something that I'm missing? I put all the factory primary componets back in and the machine runs great.

What is the empty weight of the 2-speeds? Are they the 38/20's or the 50/20's?

My receipt and instructions say 38-20. I can weigh one in the morning and will post the weight.

You have another problem. NO way the clutching allows you to hit a rev limiter at 20mph. Put it back to stock and try it with stock clutching..

Park brake on?

I put it back to stock and the sled runs great. Is there any chance that randy has changed the spec of the weights since Turk figured it out? When I bought the kit Randy was pushing using the red spring but I didn't want that high of engagement. He said that Turk swore by the black spring and that he was the one most familiar with that set up which is why I searched for it. The parking brake was the first thing I checked. I hate to admit it but I have been that dumb before.

You have the weights binding on something! How tight did the clutch cover go on when you installed it? You should have compressed it quite easily not much pressure then stock. What you are describing is not good and could result in a serious injury, DO NOT reinstall these weights until you figure out what the issue is.

The cover went on easily. I watched the t.y. you tube video of an ulmer clutch install on an apex and it went on similar to that. Everything seemed fine. I will stick with the stock clutch until I can figure it out.

Just a shot in the dark but my Drag and Flys were hitting the rev limter early (not at 20mph) and it ended up they were groved or worn out on the top of the weight. Not sure if the two speeds will grove like the D&F's but it's something to check.

Do the weights move freely when you install them with the washers? Check for full range of motion before installing spring and cover. Make sure they contact the rollers throughout the full range of motion.
From what you are explaining, there is definitely something wrong with the weights, and or spring if the stockers work fine.
Try the weights with the stock spring to see if there is any difference. Process of elimination.

So any news on this?

Well upon further inspection I noticed that one of the weights shows a wear mark in an odd spot. It looks like somehow one of the pivoting shoulders got flipped up when I put it together and the roller got stopped by the shoulder weight and would not allow the clutch to close on the belt. I can't believe that I missed this. I must have flipped it in with my finger when I pulled the clutch together somehow. If any one plans to run this set up, be sure to rotate the clutch around one more time and make sure everything is ok. Do not be in a hurry and take it for granted that everything is cool like I did. I am very lucky that I did not damage my clutch. I have not had a chance to make it back to the cabin to install the clutch kit again but I am 100% sure that this is what happened. STUPID...STUPID...STUPID!

The shoulder(s) must be visible on the outside outer diameter of the clutch once installed in the primary correctly (pivoting portion of weight fastener will be exposed between the spider and moveable sheave). I was unaware you could pivot it downward and install incorrectly by accident. It's extremely important to understand the directions clearly before installation. These weights exert tremendous forces on the belt (2,000lbs+) at increased rpm so consider yourself lucky to be alive! Don't install it again unless you have examined the weights, primary for any damage and know exactly what you doing.
