Wonder how many miles should be on my Apex's engine before shifting it over to synthetic oil? Got just over a 1000 miles on my Apex and I am going to do a oil change and was wondering if I should wait or shift now? Also does anyone know the part # for the oil filter? Thanks

You can use synthetic anytime. Some may disagree, but synthetic isn't actually any "slipperier" and doesn't adversely affect anything. Loads of vehicles come with it right from the factory.

Most people wait until you have about 1000 miles on the motor.
Its ok to switch to synthetic now. The filter part number is 51358 in wix.
As long as you wait until after the initial break-in period which is usually 500-1000 miles, you are good to go with synthetics. I would NOT recommend using synthetic before initial break-in though. It is too slippery to let the rings wear off the cross hatching in the cylinders and that tends to leave small gaps that lead to oil consumption and low compression which cannot be fixed easily.

Synthetic oil
According to the mechanics at my dealer, Apex's are coming from the factory these days with Yamaha's new fully synthetic 0-40 oil. I just changed mine to Mobil 1 0-30 synthetic at 700 miles.

I waited till this oil change which I have 3000 miles now. Mobil 1 0W30 is what I used this time which is the same price as Yamaha semi synthetic.

Okay, so I don't have to use conventional oil to break in my brand new $150,000 Aston Martin because they use a new engine building technology that does not require it. That's good to know but I highly doubt they use that same technology on a $9,000 snowmobile engine. Unless the manual states that it came with synthetic oil from the factory, I would not use it until after the initial break-in. Those high-end vehicles don't have a break-in period whereas your snowmobile most certainly does.
Go ahead and use synthetic to break-in your engine and I will quote this thread when you guys post about burning oil and going through a quart every 1,000 miles...
