temporary clutch fix

I replaced the jackshaft bearing this year and instead of ordering the update the dealer just ordered the bearing. so I put the bearing in with the original tapered locking piece. the piece worked its way out and the clutch was push out with no play in it. dealer says the piece is worn and i need a new one. for now i shimmed the clutch to line the belt up with the inside of the primary. the belt does not twist anymore it runs perfectly straight, but theres no play in the secondary for alignment. if the secondary is in a fixed possision will that harm anything.

There is nothing wrong with a fixed secondary if it is alligned right. The only issue I have seen is that belt wear may not be as good.

do not waste your time replacing the tapered piece, update it to the 04 threaded collar and lock nut. keep an eye on it untill its replaced, cause it can come loose again and throw out the alignment.

I too had a similar experience. In changing out bearings this season on my sled, and looking at 2 other 03RX1ER's in the bearing change out mode, I noticed that my stock locking collar was different than the other sled's locking collars. It had a raised lip on both ends instead of just on the secondary side end. So I was off to the dealer to purchase the 04 updated collar and lock ring, (I had already asked about a needed updated locking collar at my bearing buy visit) to make a long story short they did not have 1 in stock because that component has never become a frequent change out issue, and the price for the components would have been about $90.00. Also, this shop was not aware of any 03 locking collar issues.

But they did have 12 of the original 03 locking collars for $19.00 each.

After inspection of the new 03 type locking collar I noticed that it matched the style of the other 2 sleds. So I bought one and installed it, after setting my clutch offset and free play I raised the sled to spin the track. I found that the locking collar would not stay in place, and I was losing my free play. Did a check of all components involved and found everything to be OK, so I set my offset and free play to a minimun to prevent lots of movement and decided to try it and keep an eye on it.

The book calls for 15MM offset + or - 1.5MM and 1MM-2MM freeplay.

Set mine at 14.5MM with 1MM free play.

Went out for a 40 mile ride this past weekend, I stopped and checked my secondary free play on numerous occasions, and found that it was right were it should be. I guess the locking collar seated itself under power!!??!!??

What am I getting at ? Now I will be checking my secondary every time I ride until I put the 04 update in !!
Without this site, I would not have the knowledge gained on this problem.

Thanks to all that posted about this problem in the past, this site has more free info floating around than do some dealers.

mine would pop out under power and would seat it self back in on the back sihift so that it did not look ike i had a problem ether. it was not till on day wile i was do ing some clutch work and i had the secoundary off that i checked it and found that i could remove it with my fingers. the i noticed that it was all machned and groved pretty hard to chase clutching around when you have a varyable center to center. this throws every thing off paralel, c to c, defetion, belt defetion, shift ratio, even if just moves a few tho.
