First off, I'm torn. I like it but I don't like it!
I have been looking for a lighter mountain sled exclusively for boondocking. In some ways this sled hits the mark and in others it misses it by a mile. My hat's off to Yamaha for innovation but back on again when it comes to application.
Yamaha has taken another sled designed for flatlanders and put a long track on it. Look at the track approach angle in the picture. Can you say "prone to trenching"? I hope Yamaha did their homework with regard to the 14" track. We all know how the 13 1/2" track worked on the Firecat in the deep snow. How tall are the lugs on this maverick? Are they 2 1/4" like its big brother?
Wind protection? Regardless of how much you like the steep and deep you have to get there first and by the time you do with this sled your butt will be frozen to the core. This thing needs a date with an aftermarket windshield company like Dick Cheney needs shooting lessons.
Where are the hand guards? A trick matched set of windshield and handguards would help Yamaha sell 30% more of these babies.
I want to see under the hood. Is there room under that shrink wrapped cowling for a super charger? At 130 to 140 hp this thing would be a riot.
Overall, there's no doubt Yamaha is pushing the envelope and I like the concept. I also think that by next season Yamaha may have the wind protection, track approach angle and maybe have two YZ450 motors mated together for a big brother to this sled.

That is what I see in the future...the YZ450F mated motors. There has been rumours of that for a couple of years now. I think that will happen....08
Other than that...strange, but the more I look into it, the more I accept it. The more I accept it, the more I like it.
For those who really hate it...compare it to the Freestyle Tundra and then take your pick.

The trail sled has a big ole windshield, so it's available. I like the tunnel design, and running boards. Needs more hp, or less wt. I just can't imagine being happy with 80hp anymore. We'll see. Although, we ride with a guy with a hot little 500cc skidoo, water cooled, and he can really get around. Maybe this sled will suprise people.

I guess to make comments on my own post; all in all I’m pretty excited about it. Like RX1M Pete said: Every time I look at it, it grows on me. With a nice set of Powermadds and a little colour this thing could look hardcore!
I can’t wait to sit on one to see how it feels; that seat is AWESOME

This is exactly what I was wanting for my wife, then I can take it on spring rides when the snow is rock hard.

I think it would be the perfect sled for my area...Rough trails...a foot of fresh snow every week or so...This is a really good all round sled

I agree and it looks like it would fit too. I don't know how much heavier the engine would be but the sled could be just over 500 lbs with 120 hp. Now we're talkin!
The engine turns 11,000+ RPMs so I would guess it have a gear reduction unit?

As i mentioned in another thread, MC Xpress is readying a turbo kit for the Phazer, 150 hp for the standard version. Race version = 200 hp. Price will probably be about the same as for the RS kit.

Laban,
All I can say, is that if your right about the turbo "HANG THE ON!!!" I think I’m becoming obsessed with this thing.
Maybe see ya RX-1, hello Phazer mountain

I think it is awesome. We will really be considering one for next year. Life is too short not to have fun. The wife and I both ride dirt bikes and this could be just the ticket plus 4-stroke, EFI, E-start, reverse, lots to love....
