Thoughts on the 2010 Nytro Changes

Don't get me wrong here I'm happy not to be buying a new sled as well but its a little frustrating when you buy a new model then have to sink a bunch of cash into it only to have them do all the right moves from the factory a year later when had they done their homework in the first place we wouldn't of had to mod anything. I would personally rather spend my $$ on fuel than parts.

Rx1M5

Rx1M5 you are pretty heated on this one huh? I see points from both sides on the 2010 models. Let s take a step back for a minute and look at the big picture... Yamaha has always gone slowly with what we all bark for year after year. That is not going to change just because we want it to. The changes they made to the Nytro are a testament to the fact that they ARE watching what we are doing to our sleds. It is an evolution and just because they didn't address ALL of the things on our wish lists shouldn't be such a huge disappointment. No company makes a perfect machine. EVERY SINGLE SLED made has pros and cons. We have known for the begining of time that Yami's are heavier and their suspensions are 'not as good' as the others (although I have no gripes with my sleds suspensions). Part of the fun of snowmobiling, at least for me and my buddies, is changing and modifying our machines to fit each one of our personal needs and wishes. So if you think you would buy another brand of sled and not mod it and would have the perfect machine for you then I say do it.... I've got a sneaking feeling you'll find it much the same only oilier.... :jump:

P.S. the new BLACK 162" Nytro MTX is sick looking.... kinda wishing I waited on my MTX!!! :o|

Yah I guess I am getting a bit wound up but my point is Yamaha clearly has the biggest war chest out there and with a little planning and forsight they could pretty well put everyone else out of the mountain market yet they just plod along. They've done it for so many years that we've come to expect it as normal and even embrace the chance to mod our sleds, spend some cash and throw away all the useless stock parts witness the 08/09 Maverick POS track basically worth nothing. My sled is as modded as anybodys out there and I too like doing that but I have at least 5 friends who would buy blue if the sleds worked out of the box. Some guys just want to pull the cord or turn the key and go, in fact I would wager most want it that way. I rode my MTX stock for 1/2 a season and it left a lot to be desired, I was getting kicked by everything. Modded up its ya know OK but its still down on power compared to whats available. It aint no big iron sled, no matter how you slice it the power to weight isn't there. I'll likely end up turboing this one too but most guys I ride with don't want to be bothered with that and I can't blame them, so they all ride other brands that make more power.

If I had my way I'd have Yamaha offer the build your own mod sled program where you get a bulkhead, 170 hp engine, all electrics and plastic for like $6k and forget about all the rest but that wouldn't address the needs of the majority, but think what you could do if you didn't have to waste any money on useless stock parts.

Well said, but at least they have taken some steps to what we want which is a big improvement from the past. yes it is years over due but at least there is a sign of listening. I predict a OEM turbo sled from yamaha in the not to distant future. As soon as they can put together a system where you can not easily monkey with (i.e. diesel p/u's with turbo's) and the system is totally closed loop then they will offer one.

The crate idea is good but the liability issues would be enormous and prevent that from ever happening.

Rx1M5

That would be pretty sweet.

They could have came out with the sweetest mtn sled and most of us would still dump $$$ into mods.

The avg joe (who probably wants nothing to do with this forum or any other snowmobile forum) probably isn't complaining about the stock set up. At least the ones i run into don't.

I may be skeptical, but "your startin' to scare me"

WE all think yamaha is the only manu that doesnt get there #*$&@ right the first year hell no they are all that way. damn in 06 i bought a brand new rmk 700 put 1800 dollars into it to get it to where it should of been stock, and then the damn thing snapped a crank in the first 600 miles, belts every 100 miles or so then they try to sell you these 200 dollar belts that will give you 500 miles before they disinagrate. yamaha puts out a reliable sled imo one that you can ride in and not have to worry about if your towing it back to the truck.sure they can do some things to make it better but i have to say the yamaha is by far the most reliable sled i have ever owned... :yam: now all we need is boosted sleds from the factory for 13 g`s 250 hp

Rx1M5 I totally agree. I wanted more, more power I could have lived with the "poor" rear suspension another year and lack lustre track. But I needed more power, not much more but more. I had to totally rip apart my RX-1 Mountain to make it a reasonable mountain sled, and my FX Nytro while fun to ride still does not compare to my Dragon RMK (stock vs stock). I was completely ready to snowcheck a new FX Nytro MTX if it had more power and nothing else..............so now I wait and see.

This economic downturn really hit in the last 6 months or so. Last weekend I was watching a program on TV and they were interviewing a guy from Cat and they showed the development process of a new sled. The Cat guy said it takes a full 3 years to develop a sled from the ground up, so with that in mind then the Apex which is basically an Rx1 was started in 2000. By my calculations that makes the Deltabox chassis 10 seasons old so don't be trying to tell me thats state of the art. I really don't see how they can't of had something better already in the works, cause if they don't the blue faithfull are screwed cause its already too late.

Rant over

Rx1M5

I can tell you for a fact I started seeing prototype yamaha 4 strokes on the trails around my cottage in 2000/2001. Some even looked a lot like an RX1. So when the big news hit that for 03 there would be an RX1 4 cylinder 4 stoke sled by yamaha, I was not shocked.

I will be in shock if a new apex does not appear for 2011.

I really thought they would have put out a new apex in the nytro chasis. The apex motor in the current nytro skid then you have a sled. I wished to see a 10 gallon tank. 42 miles and my fuel light on last time riding:( I had nothing but problems with my vector and I can not say that I all that happy with this one. I can say I ride blue because I know I am coming out and not being towed out. My buddies Rev 600 is the closest sled as far as reliablility anything bigger well you are rolling the dice as to when the motor will go.

What happened to the yamaha? Remeber the 96 xtc? It was the first sled with the aluminum bulk head and it was the lightest sled on the market and had the best suspension. Yamaha started the light weight and they started the 4 stroke industry. I think they have lost the fine tuning ability/care. I love 4 strokes and never want to ride another 2 stroke. The next one will be a 150hp sled so the I would say the first manufacture that figures out the weight and hp will get my next sled.

I hope it is blue!!

I rode the 2010 Nytro MTX 162 SE yesterday and in all reality, this thing rocks. I have an '09 MTX with Fox Float X's up front, Timbersled skid in rear, and simmons Gen II skis, and a few other minor goodies, and the only difference i could find was ski's. If i had waited a year and got a 2010 probably all i would be buying is a set of ski's and have 3500 extra laying around to put towards boosting this thing. Granted the timbersled is slightly better/lighter, but the difference is so minor it's not worth the 2500.00 to do it. The only thing now the Nytro needs is ski's and power, otherwise this thing rocks!!!!!!

So Yami450D, where did you get to ride the new sled? I am trying to figure out 162 or 153? Being new to snowmobiling and living in Calgary I have been leaning towards the shorter sled. How did that longer sled feel?

Lots of great discussion on the options! I sat down last night and started crunching some numbers.

First there seems to be about $1000 difference been US and Canadian list prices by time you take conversion into account. Not sure how they justify this! Unfortunately, like most companies they really do not allow cross boarder shopping, but it would be worth it considering I am looking at two sleds.

I also looked at taking a cheaper 08 sled and added a Timbersled rear, Fox Floats up front, Simmons GEN II skis and new Barkbuster front end. Price got to within $400 of the new sled and this didn't include replacing the track. My hopes is that new track on the 2010 has fixed the 08/09 track issues.

I look forward to first part of March to see what the competition has, although with all the issues that Doo has been having I am hoping that they do not deliver a 4 stroke mountain sled at a better price that would require me to think through that scenario. I held off to this year expecting a Mountain sled change by Yamaha as I do value a reliable sled. Like most of you a few more pounds off and little more HP would have been nice, but over all they did move in the right direction.

I rode it north of Saskatoon in say about a foot of powder. I couldn't really tell the difference in this scenario. I guess it really depends on your riding style. If you are more into climbing hills get the 162". if your main thing is boondocking/playing in the tree's, hitting some drops and jumps and messing around mostly, get the 153". Personally i wish i woulda held out for a 2010. My family owns a Yammi dealership. When it came down to it all buying a 09 Nytro MTX (at old pricing cost) a timbersled rear skid, simmons Gen II ski's, and Fox Floats up front roughly ended up being about 17,000 tax paid. I'm betting it won't be too hard to pick up a 2010 Nytro MTX for about 15,500- 15,900 Tax paid.

Yami450D, any pics of the new SE's? Ive got a couple coming and would love to see as many shots as I can find, as they wont bring the mountain sleds to the east for any Yamaha demo days.
