Hey guys, I know it's not a viper but I thought a few of you may have an idea. I bought my 12 year old son a 2001 sxr 500. Does anybody know if there is some sort of throttle limiter I can put on or just add a block and clamp behind throttle.
Yes just a block under throttle. Could also put a spacer on secondary and primary to keep primary from closing all the way and secondary from opening. They learn quick though but I know the worry feeling. Still do with my daughter on Phazer.

You can also go on ebay and buy a remote cut off that works for enough distance (usually). Tape kill switch on your handlebars and hit it and poof engine off on his sled. I bought the universal for scooters and put it on the mini 120. Won't help throttle of course but is good for emergencies and training

Thank you Cannondale and stingray just heard those little 500,s are pretty quick, do not know much about them it was just really good shape.
Very stable though so should be good to learn with. Just take him in a field or lake first time.

He will be fine with the sxr500. Super flat riding sled, unlike the Phazer. Some type of speed control is a good idea though until he gets some experience on it because it is a 90 mph sled (should see high 90s on the speedo under idea conditions). My guess is that he will be timid at first, but once he gets comfortable, that's when it can get hairy. Best to limit speed until you are sure that he can avoid bad decisions. Heck, my kid is 21 and a good rider, and I still worry about him. Block under the flipper might be best as limiting clutch might cause over rev that you don't want with the 500 twin.

I used large compressor hose and a hose clamp. At first I had the screw part behind the flipper and when I thought they were responsible enough I added power by turning the clamp and removed the whole thing when they complained that they wanted a little more. I also made sure they didn't get a good belt deflection.
Well I would say just let it go he will learn the throttle but many years ago I had my 13 yr old step daughter trained on a 600 v max deluxe. we went on a l long ride and I decided it was to risky with that sled due to its age so I put her on a 05 rx-1 she did great till we stopped for fuel I stopped first. fueled up and had her pull up she forgot what she was on and hit the throttle when she hit me standing there dead center she was doing close to 40. I could not get out of the way and put my right hand down on the hood on instinct and it caught in the vent slot dislocating my throttle thumb. flipped me clear over the sled landing on the blacktop behind her. I had to put the thumb back in the joint and let me tell you that 130 miles home was the worse ride I ever had. Also she would not go over 30 the whole way home
