timing chain life

So your saying it's normal? Doesn't give you a very warm feeling.

Follow the correct install procedure and it won't jump. I've had a little experience with this over the years and the first few I did didn't go all that smoothly either.

Awsome. This makes me feel better. I finally got the sprocket lines and marks all lined up. I'll zip tie it to check the valves. And cut them and put the cover on.

Thanks grizz. I'll learn the tricks. Other then this the build has gone real well

About how many miles are on these engine's before the adjusters have to be replaced? Are these self adjusting adjusters?

The tensioner is self adjusting. It has a ratcheting mechanism that extends against a guide as the chain, gears and guides wear. The tensioner really should not need replaced in the life of the engine. These engines can push 100 thousand miles without issue as long as they are properly maintained.

There was an issue with some of the tensioners failing from 2005-2007 on the 3 cyclinder engines. Yamaha issued a service bulletin warning of the failures but never recalled them. This was isolated to those years and Yamaha made a revised tensioner available for replacement. The FI 3 cylinder engine that came out in 2008 in the Nytro had a different style of tensioner and has never had any know issues.
