I have been playing around with trying to get the sag out of the rear of my 2008 Nytro. I have had the torsion springs in and out a few times. The last time the torsion spring hooks (part 34 below) on the lower end, behind the idler wheel had turned and the closed top was worn off. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong.
To pull the long arm of the torsion spring out of the way I was pushing the hooks forward, then pulling the springs up and over the idler wheel. To reinstall I would pull the spring back over the wheel and then tap the closed end hook back over the end of the torsion spring. Is there a different way to accomplish this task?
Either I totally forgot to rotate the hooks back up over the spring ends or they rotated themselves. Trying to figure that out.
I will be ordering new hooks for both sides.

I unbolt the wheel with hook on it then slide hook on spring, load spring, reinstall bolt.

Sounds like you are doing everything right.
There is a chance you forgot to rotate the plastic saddle back, but I would think once the spring started flexing it may work the saddle into position.
If you clobbered bump in the right spot, it could have worked the spring out of the saddle.....
Would be a rare occurrence though.

Thanks. It's both sides. So maybe I forgot to do both sides.

Something sounds fishy.
I hope it was as simple as not rolling the saddle back in place.
But like you discovered, if they weren't in position, the first bump would send the torsion spring through the end of the plastic saddle. Game over.

Mine has done this 2x's. Not sure why, but they may be catching ice? The tops were broken off and they were flipped over. I replaced them and the same thing happened about a year later. Now I just cut the tops off and no issues.

That is what happened to mine.
So you are running fine with the tops broken off? Maybe I won't replace them.

I would not bother. Just trim them up a bit. Try to salvage as much of the sides of the guides as possible. I had the same concerns so I spent the money to replace them and now realize it is just plastic so they really are no going to stop the spring from popping out of the carrier. I also mounted a set of cable scratchers near the carrier that would deflect the torsion bar away from the track if it ever did decide to jump to the outside. I just put BOP 4 position adjuster blocks in, #4 is 3/4" or so more over #3 (being H on OEM), stiffer rear end + much less sag.
Installed them by removing the block C-clip, rotating the spring retainer down & pulling the spring arm over the idler wheel. Pretty simple.
Haven't had a chance to try them out yet, hopefully work for what I wanted instead of going to heavier springs.

I just installed the same adjuster blocks. Hope they work well. I need something in between the stock med and soft setting. I have gained 15 ibs since last winter tho so maybe no longer necessary!! I am up to 180 ibs.

Could be ice too. I am installing a tunnel blockoff plate to reduce ice.

So what's the theory on ice?
Does ice get on the hooks and then freeze? And when the suspension moves the ice breaks the hook?

Sometimes there is a wedge of ice on the tunnel that may hit the carrier.

I just installed the new adj block (4 positions), on my xtx. Ran 300 + miles in the Gaspe last weekend. I ran them on pos #4..much less sag now. Didn't find it too stiff, but I'm 265 lbs plus gear and back pack w tools
