Tunnel Close - Both Holes?

Here in Wisconsin the dry fall like, tundra like, fall like weather continues this weekend. As such, I find myself with time to do some mods. on the FX. Studs, tunnel protectors and closing the tunnel hole are on the agenda along with a few suspension adjusments.

Should only the large rear hole be covered or both holes? The front hole is very close to the pipes would the pipes get to hot without the air and snow connecting with them? Is the front hole the reason the front of the tunnel ices up?

Any comments on this appreciated.
 

I have only closed the large rear hole and it made a big difference. Havent experienced any ice/snow problems after this mod. Yamaha made the hole after testing in 10 degree celcius and noticed problems with seat and plastic panels around the muffler. I dont drive in tempratures like that so I will keep my closed.

Btw: Closing the tunnel will not cause any loss in performance! I have gotten this confirmed today from yamaha scandinavia. The hole is there to prevent meltdown of plastic and seat in "summer tempratures" All statement of loss in power/performance is BS according yamaha so end of that discussion.

Also: If you close the hole and your plastic and seat get dammaged by heat from the muffler there will be no warranty on this parts but you will not ruin warranty on engine.
 
Closed front of mine with no problems, still get snow from bumper hole. Wish there was a good way to plug it and have it look good!

I had been wondering where to carry my beverages! Doesnt it get a little warm back there? Have to drink faster I guess!

Has anyone else heard of a dealer selling these kits? Also I have been told by the dealer that it will not void my warranty! I wonder if this would be true if it melted the plastic? I kind of doubt it?

I have the aluminum plate drilled and bolted under the seat (2 -1/4" bolts) and I used existing holes under the tool box to bolt at the rear. I used a small amount of silicone in the middle so if it has to come off, then it will very easily!
 
Front hole too

Anyone with a comment on closing the front hole?

I'm leaning toward closing only the rear hole, but since I'm in there it would be a good time to close off the front one as well.

Comments? Has covering only the rear hole solved all the tunnel icing problems? I am concerned about icing at the front heat exchanger or is this a non-issue?
 
Covering the rear hole does NOT solve all problems, specifically, I still get water that seeps under the rubber flaps at the front of the sled and down the running boards freezing my pants to the tunnel. I will be covering the front hole as well next time I do the oil change.

That's the answer I was looking for. I will cover the front hole as well. I hope my 90 degree drill will work from the under side of the tunnel - may have to drop the suspension or remove the tank and exhaust.

It seems to me that there is plenty of air space around the header pipe so the heat will hopefully not be a problem.

close both holes. I'v been in powder with my new freeride track and have problems with water spreading in front of the tunnel and running board. No problem with stock track but now the higher lugs are throwing snow up the front hole.
 
Exhaust Tempature

After reading upbushman's post regarding exhaust tempature, I may just wait to close the front hole. We do mainly trail riding and it may be in our best interest to see how big a problem we have with just the rear tunnel closed.

Maybe it would make sense to close the front tunnel and remove the side panels with the rubber strip. That way more air would be able to move around the header pipe - trapping less hot air. I noticed a lot of debris on top of the tunnel do the them being open, it sure wold be nice to close them both, but with the overheating issue already apparent it might just warrant only closing the rear hole?
