What is the reason for these things.? All im seeing is a lot of added unwanted ice and weight back there. I know it helps and you should have it if you have studs but what if you dont? I do know that not all other snowmobiles have them so does that mean that they are not neccesary? Can i safely function with out them? The reason i want them off is so i can fit a bigger track on this summer to really help the nytro in the deep and give it the added traction because the ripsaw on it now is JUNK!!! Well thanks for helping me out here

Yes - Yes - Yes - Rip those things out!

You're right, they do collect a ton of snow and ice that you end up hauling around.
If you are not running studs, then you can safely remove them. I took them out of my sled, and have been running it that way for 4000 miles.

I'm running a 136x1.5" track (stretched my sled 2 years ago). 1.5" is the tallest lug you can fit in there without removing the front cooling protectors.
