I am thinking about gearing down the top gear in my vector, but I do not have a clutch kit. Do you have to clutch the sled to gain from the gearing change? I believe the change is from a 23 top to a 22 top? Has anyone done this without the clutch kit? I am planning on doing the clutch kit in the future but money is an issue right now.... Thanks in advance.

gearing

i would belive that the stock gears are 22-38, and you would want to gear up. i have a vector and i run a bender clutch kit with 23-38 for the lakes and 21-38 for when i jump and need more grunt. :yam: :-o

stoxk vector is 22-38.if you gear down you might see a slight rpm increase if you do you can add weight to the stock weights ist will cost you under 2.00.I would run 21-38.With 21-38 you can run in the 1teens on radar or gps.Yow ill actaully gain mpg gearing down 1 tooth because the 22-38 is overgeared for the 120hp motor.

I'm thinking of gearing down my '06 rage from 22-39 to 20-39.
Anyone tried?
That would put me between the nytro and vector mountain in gear ratio.
Would that be to much?
Would 21-39 be better?
I'm running a maxx perf trail clutch kit also.
Do i have to change the chain?

Ryen that's what I prefer to run is 20-39 ratio that's what I ran all last year.I prfer that gearing for my riding style.Trail, off trail, and lake racing because we usually run 1000ft max.If your looking for tp mph run 21-38.You won't achieve any hight mph by running gearing higher than 21-38 there isn't enough hp out of the 3 cylinder engine.

where do you all get the 21 tooth gear? My local dealer has no listing. He is going to try yamaha corporate.

We can get them for $35. I would have to look to see what we have in stock, but if we don't have it in stock it takes 3-4 days to get. 605-387-2833

Good information on this thread. I looked up the procedure in the shop manual because I have never changed gears. How long of a job is it?

Get a socket set and wrench set that include a 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, and then a large crescent wrench for the top gear nut or the proper socket to do it. You'll also need a 4mm allen wrench, #15 torx, and some gear lube.

;)!

So gearing down to a 21 on top without changes to the stock clutching will improve lowend AND topend performance?

If so, how noticable?

tfin yes you are correct some sled might cause a slight over rev which you can get a heavier rivet for the stock weight whicjh cost about 1.00 for all three.
The stock chain will work.

What should be peak RPM?
