VECTOR MOTOR/CLUTCH NOISE?

Believe me: This is where most of the noise comes from. It pretty much disappears under load though.
Sure can't argue the splines off the crank but if there's enough slop there to generate the kind of racket we're hearing from these machines there's going to be a whole bunch of us standing next to broken down machines in a relatively short period of time.

I don't want to be disrespectful Freerider but I sure hope you're wrong as my experience with construction equipment tells me that splined shafts with a lot of slop tend to not be splined for too long. :(

Freerider: That is some excellent sarcasm. (I probably had that coming.) Thanks for the link. If I had more time I would have just taken the motor apart and checked. I'm still not convinced this is where the rattle comes from primarily. Try this: remove the belt, grab the sliding half of the clutch, and wiggle it back and forth. There is actually a fair bit of play. I would suspect that the newly discoved splines are manufactured to a very high level of accuracy and don't have much slop.
Anyway, I'm going to go look for the rotary girder on my Rage.

I am positive the noise is comeing from the play between the spider
buttons and sliding sheve. Has anyone tryed shimming the buttons out
on the rage like TYPE787x has mentioned? TYPE187x did you do this
on an RS engine or some other sled? He just might be on to an easy
fix. I don't have the tools on hand to remove the spider or I think I
would give it a try.

Someone needs to try and shim the clutch and let us all know how it turned out! Let´s hope you guys are right and I´m wrong, cause then it would be an easy fix! :D

I read all these post and now ask myself is this new? My brother in law bought the fist year RX-1 and it's always had this rattle at idle. Everyone I've ever heard has it. So this year we pick up my wifes new Vector and it has the rattle at idle. I thought it was the same rattle these clutches have always had. Are you guys telling me the RS rattle is different? I haven't heard of any failures related to this on the RX-1's.

Stylus,

I'd be willing to bet Mr. Sled an adult beverage that the noise has always been there, covered up by louder noises on previous sleds.
:drink:

My wife tells me that she hears rattling sounds all the time. Unfortunately, she says it's coming from my head. :o|
That must be common to wives because mine says the same thing. I asked her if it was like how only dogs can hear a dog whistle and she gave me a swat.

Back to the thread subject, Kevin at Port Yamaha was kind enough to do a backward search on 8BW-17654-20-00 SPACER 1 that's shown as item #25 on the attached picture. This particular sheet is from a '94 VMax 600 but that part was used on other machines of that vintage.

We started to speculate why that part was no longer used but found it more fun to teach Meatball some French phrases he could use with his new girlfriend he met at the Syracuse show.

Well this is just dandy, first I find out that yam hoses me on the front shocks on my Venture(sealed, non inverted) then I find out that the skis are not the saddleless type(last years skiis) both of which were clearly shown in all the yamaha photos and videos.......now after promising a clean, quiet, powerfull, no compromise snowmobile of hi quality(which is all reasons why I jumped from cat) I find out the the engine rattles at an idle loudly. This is not what I expected of this model at all. I am very dissatisfied so far. I don,t want to seem like a gloomy guss, but yamaha and me are not getting off on the right foot here. Should I just lay down and take my lumps (after all I am the sucker who bought one with out ever seeing or riding a finished production model) or should I(hopefully we) complain and demand something be done about these issues.

Slush Monster,
Did it on two Vectors, cured both. Just a reminder, if you do this just make sure the spider still slides in the sheave when you're done. If you have to force it at all it could bind and the pri clutch won't work right. Some guys say they'll assemble it even if it's just a little tight and the buttons will wear in, but I haven't done it so can't recommend it.

acpantera, please don't take this post the wroing way, but just to try and make you feel better, these were the only Vectors in the group that had this noise. 5 other sleds had little or no noise (little meaning the only reason the nose was noticed was because we were looking for it.)
You're not a sucker, you bought an awesome touring sled that the other brand 2-up guys will be jealous ofwhen they just see it and definitley if they ride it. The only real advantage with the saddleless skis is about 2lbs of weight loss, and the shocks you got ride better than the HPGs. In my past experience, the V-max sleds that came with these shocks rode much cushier than the HPG models.
Just my opinion, but I'm thinking when you finally get to ride your sled you'll be smilingand happy you made the switch

type787x,

Did you need to pull the primary to do this?

With the Vector, how much force is required on the primary spring to get the clutch back together?

From what I am reading not much and I assume you could easily overcome the spring force by hand but would like to hear it from someone who has done it.

TYPE787X
I assume you had to remove the spider to install the shims, right?
Did you use the yamaha clutch holder and the yamaha spider removal
tool? or did you find a good aftermarket tool? I have read the service
procedure for removeing the spider from my mm700 service manual
but will need to get the right tools. Or is there some other trick that
I am missing?
