Viper RTX or LTX?

Thinking this will be my last year on my Nytro XTX (2012), I'm looking to give Yamaha another shot as I am in love with this motor. However, I hate just about everything else this sled does unless I'm on hardpack with chop or in 2+ feet of powder.

Will the RTX with 129" skid be ok for the 5-10% of off trail I do, or will the LTX handle well enough on the trail?

I would most likely change to a better ski like the Curve or C&A regardless.

So far I think the consensus of ltx and rtx owners is the most think the sled is too stiff in the suspension area. My buddy has a nytro rtx and when we trade off the only difference I can tell so far is that my ltx se bridges bumps much better which it should. Both ride rather rough on trails however the viper has no suspension adjustment other then loosening up front spring on skid. The nytro has had revalve and spring changes. Once the valving on the vipers gets figured out I'm hoping there will be a big improvement. I love my sled but can't wait to get it to have a little more plush feeling. From what I've gathered, the rtx guys are making it sound as tho the 129 has no problem pulling up front end and wheelieing over bumps. The ltx does not seem to have that type of weight transfer at all but then again it could still be because of shock valving. Once setup properly either sled will do exactly what you need it to. May get a little more traction of trail with the 137 but personally I don't think it's going to be enough to really notice as the sled gets up and floats good
 
The 137 skid handles great on the trail in this chassis. The rtx might be a little better in the corners but not as much as you might expect. Personally , I have no reason or desire to go back to a 120 something slid length with the way some of the 130's handle. The positive thing is I doubt you will be disappointed overall with either one. Even the 129's do much better off trail than the older low hanging sleds of the past
 
137 without a doubt. i have the ltx and just got off a rtx there is no comparison. both where on trail. the rtx seemed twitchy and the back seemed squirrely. the rear skid on both are firm but they handle the best that way.
 
I'd say if your trails that you ride mostly are tight/twisty corner to corner type trails...go with the RTX. Anything else then actually both sleds would be great. I honestly don't feel that much of a difference between the two in any kind of riding other than the RTX getting the nod in tight stuff. BTW...I came of a Nytro xtx myself.
 
It depends. Having ridden both and owning a RTX I will give the edge to the LTX in the corners. The front is planted on that sled stock and requires much less throttle control to corner flat. If you like big bumps,jumping,lots of transfer and a frontend that just feel lighter than the LTX 137 then the RTX is what you need. I believe in tight highspeed corners the LTX is easier to corner. Tradeoffs with either but waay ahead of other stock Yamahas in either case. A RTX can be setup with just adjustments to corner very flat also where it seems the LTX guys cant get the transfer and light front a RTX has. You decide.
 
I had the same issue when I ordered last spring. On the demo rides they had a RTX and a XTX. Both were really nice but the RTX really shined in the twisties and the XTX was better in the rough but was more track than I needed for 95% trail riding I do. I ordered the RTX because it is what I liked on my demo. Wish I could have rode a LTX but when you think about it there is probably only another 4" of track on the ground. Going to be pretty similar I am guessing.
 
I'm coming off of a 144 Nytro, but before that I had a RTX SE Nytro and by far I think the XTX was a better sled. It was almost as good in the tight trails, but excelled everywhere else, I think the Viper LTX will be the same way. I don't think you will notice that much difference in the trails, but you will notice in powder or any off trail situation. I think the LTX is the way to go. Even with the turbo on trails it's hard to get the front end in the air. Granted I have mine firm as hell and don't get much transfer. It's great through rough trails and I wouldn't change a thing. I have heard that the RTX is a little tail happy. But I have never rode one. I'm not really worried about traction cause I have a 1.6 ice ripper track. And that hooks up great!
 
No issues with my Rtx being tail happy guess but I am used to all 121" tracks. Love the handling of my RTX
 
I have an RTX and have been amazed at how much snow it can go through and am also very happy with the way it handles on the trails.
 
I wouldn't trade my LTX for anything! Bridges bumps like a champ still get through the corners as well as my old cat 121 and has more track on the ground for acceleration. All wins for me.
