Have 1400 miles on viper now starter never sounded right since new and on weekend it piled up and striped teeth of starter, drive and ring gear so it's at dealer now for warranty repair.
Any others have this happen
Not liking all those pieces of gears flowing through engine before it let go

Make that two

Same thing happened here, 1000 miles. Had a feeling something was going to happen when starting. It just didn't sound right, then one day grind, grind, grind. Not a pleasant sound. I was just glad it happened at home and not in the middle of nowhere.

Its at the dealer now.

Had mine at the dealer for the chaincase update and when I picked it up they said they changed mine out too. Apparently it had a few teeth broke off but it wasn't making any noise. Glad they caught it before something bad happened

Viper Starter Failure

Had mine fail at 189 miles, but was lucky that it happened in the garage and not on the trail...called the dealer and was told they had 3 starters go with one being the Cat version and two Yamaha versions so yes it not just an isolated failure...called Yamaha customer service on this as this was the second time that the sled was in for broken parts during the first 189 miles and had two vacations ended...very frustrating...just hope that the reverse servo gear last long enough for parts to come into the Yamaha dealers

I wonder if the starter on the viper is a cat part, or a yamaha part. Guess I had assumed that since it's a yamaha motor, that it would have a yamaha starter. Can anyone confirm?

Had a no start situation this weekend, with only 785 miles on the XTX she left me left me stuck in the woods, and at the farthest point of our intended loop that day. A couples of miles on a tow rope to get out of the woods and $400 two hour flatbed drive back to the trailer.
Our family 07 phazer had the starter go bad after one ride.

Battery is good, solenoid functioning, starter just clicking.
Dropped off at dealer and hope I'll have it for next weekend. We still have snow, but the long days are eating the exposed trail surfaces up.

The past two rides I noticed the starting acting up. It would crank a few revolutions and then kick back with a metallic sound. This was a random occurrence and happened either hot or cold.

I never did like the idea of not having a pull starter.
