Wal-Mart Tech 2000 Oil and Fram Filter Review

I thought the screen in the bottom of the tank was there to catch the crap ( some people are not to careful ) that could get in the tank buy checking or adding oil. This protects the pump and helps save the filter for the fine wear particles.

If your relying on that screen to catch stuff that your filter let through then you really need to think this over again. You said you only change it once a season right so why cheap out for that very same reason I spend the money on the very best. Which for my money is the Pure One oil filter and Amsoil 0w40 4 stroke oil.

My big question is why skimp on oil and filter when you may only change it once or twice a year, how much are you really saving? $5-6? and ontop of that you are helping to drive the smaller retailers out of town by getting stuff at wal-mart. before wal-mart came to our town we had 4 large retailers, 4 large grocery stores, and a real nice downtown shopping area now all we have left is wal-mart and only two grocrey stores and a ghost town downtown. I personally go out of my way to avoid spending any money at wal-mart.

Point well taken. I support my local hardware and Grocery store before I go to Wal-Mart. Tech 2000 is manufactured in the USA. I am not a fan of how the oi industry is hitting our wallets.

I am a clear supporter of the American product but at the same time I look to innovation and quality before I commit to anything. I did by-the-way purchase a 2008 Chevy Malibu.

There was a post on here about 3 or 4 yrs ago about filters and it had a link to a magazine article that (as I remember) did an in depth study of many manufacturers of filters. I have looked around for the last 1/2 hr trying to find it. No luck. Maybe someone else can locate. I searched: "oil and filter", "oil and filter and study", etc.

Anyway, it opened my eyes about FRAM filters after I read it. I no longer use them in my vehicles - even though in more than 30yrs of using them in various vehicles I never had an engine failure. I attribute the lack of failures more to use of good oil and maintenance practices than filters.

I would only count on the filter in the oil tank to catch stuff that accidentally gets in when you remove the cap to check/change the oil. -Like a piece of the sealing foil from an oil container. :rocks:

This quote is from the 2005 Rage shop manual: "Engine oil also lubricates the starter clutch. In order to prevent clutch slippage, do not mix any chemical additives with the oil or use oils of a higher grade than "CD". In addition, do not use oils labeled "ENERGY CONSERVING II" or higher". Does the Tech 2000 fall under the ok category?

If you do some searches on this site you will quickly find that the information you cite from the Shop Manual is incorrect. The 4-stroke Yamaha snowmobile engines do not use a starter clutch (that applies to the motorcycles) and the oil spec is wrong.

Technically, "CD" rated oil applies to diesel engines. Many of us use Mobil 1 or Amsoil after break in.

Getting off topic for a second, BUT
LMAO, just thinking about a yammie owner taking an AMERICAN co. like WAL-MART to task.
No offense, just find it ammusing, butt hen again i won't ever appoligize for the products i buy no matter where in the world they come from.

from the link that snoway posted it's amazing that of the 13 filters cut open and exposed that the fram is the only 1 that has cardboard ends, as for me if you can afford a $12,000 sled then i can afford an extra $5-$10 a year for a better filter.
NO FRAM FOR ME!!!!

Talked to the dealer and the fully synthetics are not to be used in manual shift/clutched engines.

Tell me this or help me to understand what I am not comprehending here...why is it that I have $80K worth of automobiles (150-200K miles on them or 350K total), ATVs, and a tractor, which I have religiously used Tech 2000 oils and fram filters on without any issue in the past?

To compare and contrast filters, the fram has 11 holes in it's filter versus the Yamaha's 7. When I check the filter for heat (circulation) after the oil change, it felt no different than Yamaha's OEM filter and it seemed to filter the oil very well. As far as OEM filters, on my first Yamaha filter change I had to pry off the gasket ring in order to put the new one in place.

I beleive it is all marketing dollars we are paying for!

A good point. I will not shop at Walmart. All they do is put honest companies out of business, and then raise there prices when no one else is left. Whoever buys from Walmart should be ashamed of themselves. Saving a few pennies, and putting every little shop out of work.

I remember that oil filter study also, and I also quit using Fram Filters. I believe the article had stated that Fram went overseas and that is when the quality cheapened on them. They are no longer made in the USA.
