water on v belt causes slipping

After riding through some water that was about 18 inches deep, my Kodiak 400's v belt started slipping. After opening the drain plug and letting the water out it ran ok again. Is it normal for water to enter as it did? Is there a way to seal the water out? When this happens is specific maintenance required? These questions are probably very basic but I'm new to this sport.

Thanks for your help, jwil

You should be able to go through water up the top of the seat before the belt gets wet.
I think either you have a pinhole somewhere in the air tubing or you CVT cover seal isnt sealing properly.

I agree with Octane, twice in one day.

Check your 'snorkle' connections on both sides of the CVT housing. The rear tube slipped off my Kodiak 450 for some reason and caused the same issue you described in pretty much the same conditions.

I secured the tube and the issue went away. If your machine runs OK after draining you should be OK as the 'Grizzly Grease' on the clutches is somewhat waterproof. However, if it feels like the clutches are slipping you'll need to take it apart, clean out the gunk and regrease the assembly.

Hopefully it's simple.
