I am taking my apex to colorado to do some riding. I already dropped to a 22 top gear with 68 link chain. I have a clutch kit that engages at 4200 rpm is this to high? Should I put the stock spring and weights back on? I have heard about maybe drilling out rivets on stock weights should I do that? I want to be able to try and climb some mountains. What else should I do to get ready?

You should be ok with your RPM. I want to say mine engaged around 4500RPM. What elevation are you going to be riding at? From 6000ft and up you are ok removing all the rivets from the stock clutch weights. I'm pretty sure that is the factory recommend setting. You already geared down.

You are really going to want a deep lug track, even if you are only at a stock 121" length. With the stock ripsaw and stock skiis, I'm afraid you are not going to have a very enjoyable experience, at least off trail. a wider front ski helps immensly if you can come up with a set to borrow. I actually bought an extra set of skiis for an RS Viking. Much wider than stock = better front flotation.

If you're stuck with a stock track and skiis, think about trail riding a few days and rent a mountain sled for a couple of days of off trail riding.

If you do wind up venturing off trail with your apex, remember momentum is your friend! Always loop a couple of times to pack a track before you stop. Always try to stop pointing downhill if at all possible. You wouldn't think it, but it is very possible to get stuck going downhill with deep enough snow.

Last bit of advice: Drink lots of water and take your time when you do get stuck. Don't try to just muscle your sled out. I'm from Minn-no-snow-ta and my first time out west I got altitude sickness real bad the first day. Definitly not used to the thin air. Lots of bottled water seems to have helped lots on subsequent trips out west.

Good luck and have fun!

Another thing that helps is to take a small aspirin a day. If you start this about two weeks before you go that will help you. It will help to thin your blood which will allow it to absurd more oxygen and at higher elevation that will help. I started taking it the first time I went out west (2003) and never stopped.
