What engine is faster?

I want to know if the 998 Yamaha genesis engine is faster than the 1049 genesis? Why am I asking? Good question I saw on Yamaha's website that the 1049cc is mid performance and the 998 is the top performance engine!
 
Yes the 998 cc 4 cylinder is faster than the 1049 cc three cylinder engine. If you ask why then the first reason would be HP numbers. The 998 has 160 hp. and the 1049 has 130 hp. If now you ask why the smaller cc engine has more hp. than the larger cc engine there are a lot of reasons starting with the fact that the 998 cc engine has 5 valves per cylinder for better breathing and higher rpm operating range which in turn creates more hp. I have only touched on a couple of reasons for the hp. difference, there are a lot more reasons and I think I am getting a little long winded already. If you drive both sleds the difference is dramatic and very noticeable.
 
The old adage, "you can't beat inches" apparently doesn't apply here.

Yes old adages do not apply. This topic brings to mind some thing I read a long time ago when OMC & Mercury were trying to out do each other in outboard racing. They were both limited to a specific cubic inch of displacement but the OMC engineers commented on the fact that the six cylinder Mercury engine had much better volumetric efficiency due to the extra cylinders compared to their 4 cylinder engines. The fact that the 6 cylinder could intake more air on one revolution than the 4 cylinder even though they had the same displacement made it impossible to make more horse power than the Mercury. In the Yamaha snowmobile engine case you have not only more cylinders but also more intake valves to create better breathing. We all know that an internal combustion engine is nothing more than an air pump and the more air you can put through this air pump in one revolution the more power it will make. So as you say "you can't beat inches" doesn't always apply. If you look at what the auto makers are producing (horse power wise) these days and the displacement of these newer engines and compare that to the numbers from ten or fifteen years ago you can see that the engineers are getting more and more power from less and less displacement all the time.
