What grade oil do you use?

please show all the posts you can find on this site of energy conserving oil causing starter issues.

As soon as you find someone who uses that crap.

If the fact that you have not seen anyone on here with starter issues related to oil is your basis for that statement then I don't need to prove anything. Anyone should be able to see your statement has no factual backing.

the fact that this site is the number one site dedicated to these engines in snowmobiles with thousands of users over the last 6 years should have some mention of starter problems related to oil. that is what i meant when i said its a non issue. everyone should use whatever makes them happy in all their toys.

most likely the starter problems come form someone with not the proper cold starting protection, so I would definitely go with a 0 wieght oil! A 5W or 10W might be to thick for those real cold mornings and cause wear on the starter.

0-40 Amsoil full synthetic! Three seasons and 6,000 miles! Easy to find in the great white north.

P.S. I also run it in my lawnmower and snowblower! While the lawnmower does not need the 0w the snowblower is way easier to turn over with it.

0W30 full synthetic Mobil, was on sale at Walmart for $22 for 5 quart bottle in the U.S.. Have tried 0W40 Amsoil, seemed to burn a little and cost more. Have used Yamalube 0W30 semi-synthetic, no problems but $12 a litre here in Canada. Have used Castrol 0W30 full synthetic, no problems and can buy at Canadian Tire for $9 a litre or $7 a litre when on sale. No starter issues with any of these.

Actually, you do not use any oils with a grade higher than "CD" and do not use oils labeled "Energy Consumption II." I think LB already mentioned this limit. The reason for not exceeding this specification is to preclude starter clutch slippage. (Page 6-2 of the '04 Operator's Manual.)

Also, there use to be a few posts regarding full synthetic oils causing starter problems. However, I am not sure we ever pinned the exact oil specification down.

Personally, I stick to the OEM recommendation. For the '03 and '04 that was the 5-30 Four Stroke Oil. Last year, I had to ask for it, as they no longer keep it out on the shelf.

I will add that I have over 10K miles and no oil consumption issues. But I also use Ring Free and occasionally hit her with Seafoam too. You got to keep the carbon off those rings.

I went with the yamaha semi synthetic over regular car oil. I was worried about the removal of zinc from the automotive oil which is helpful for flat tappet camshafts. I was hoping the yamalube still has it becouse they dont have to worry about the emissions aspect of the zinc.

That's why I'm currently running amsoil . Ran mobil 1 for years in everything and its easy to come by but I want the best protection possible and from what I've read now that the zinc is not there I needed to find an oil that still has the zinc.

x2 on the amsoil best stuff there is but more money. like the saying goes you get what you pay for. I would get there filter aswell just for piece of mind
