Whats better than billet wheels??????

They look good! How do you think they'll hold up? I've been following the threads about the billet wheels and read about BBYs billets self destructing. Do you think the offset of the axle was the whole reason for the failure?
I thought billets were fine on mountain sleds when you are in powder most of the time but on trail sleds... I think they take too much of a beating and transfer that shock to the rest of the sled more easily than all plastic wheels. Even though plastic wheels are hard they absorb a lot of shock because the do "give" slightly on impact much like the urethane wheels on skates and skateboards, I have a set of urethane wheels on my creeper and the difference rolling across concrete is amazing compaired to metal wheels.
I raise this question due to the fact that there seems to be a large number of insidences of suspension and frame damage due to stress (not impact) incurred on cars when the owners put on the low profile tire, bling bling wheel combinations that are popular now with the street racer wannabees.
I can't help but equate the billet wheels and their very thin area of plastic or rubber that offers very little cushioning for the components of the skid frame that are not suspended such as wheelbearings, axles, the rails themselves and so on to the low profiletire/rim combos that we feel are contributing to the afore mentioned asociated suspension damage due to stress. :ORC IMHO

Plastic is. More durable and will last longer. During the summer install your Billet wheels for looks then for real world riding re-install the plastic.

I think the jury is still out, the wheels that self destructed on me were slightly larger than stock and the manufacturer said I didnt need to run an offset axle. Well we all know what happened. I didnt have any problems with the front wheels as they were the same as factory OD. With the rubber on the outside of Cubbys, that will certainly help although it does look a little thin. I hope they work for him...BBY

Can you get oversized plastic wheels,I would like to get some bigger wheels for the back but need something that is very durable and inexspensive.

WOW, youse all don't like tha billets. I spent quite a penny on dem suckers and the manufacturer said they are warrantied for life. I guess I will jus runem and see wha happins.------Cubby

P.S. If BBY exploded those billet wheels last year, did he even get reinbursed??? No offense but if this does happen to me and these things dont hold up after what I paid for them, do you all think I will sit here and just take it???? HMMMMMM prolly knot.-----Cubby

Warrantied for life? How is that possible. What exaclty does the warranty say? Id check into it and read the fine print. I thought mine were warrantied as well and didnt get a thing out of the manufacturer. No offense Cubby, but if you are an aggressive trail rider, id be shocked if they lasted "for life"...BBY

Love the billets Cubby!
Don't get me wrong, I think they look great... I question the reliability on trails though.
You have to realize, I ride 2,500 + miles a year and my wife is my main riding partner. (on her own sled) For me reliability comes above all else on my sleds. I never had a breakdown that stranded me that I couldn't get back to camp for repairs. I had a wheel bearing go bad on a rear track wheel once and that was enough.
I just made the comparison to the tire/rim combos on the street racers because that is what billet sled wheels remind me of and here in South Jersey we are seeing a large amount of Frame/Related suspension failures probably due to the bad roads. What works in California on the street won't nesessarily work in the North East due to rough roads.

BBY, I thought you got screwed by those wheels. I made Chris from Engineered put it in writing and sign it before I shelled out the bucks.

Yup I am all about reliability also Phantom and again if these things blow up the manufacturer will see me at his front door.

As far as reliable, lets talk about the stock suspension that I had to REDO this spring that cost me some extra bucks for parts on a "reliable sled". Not to mention the "W" bracket I had to REDO and gussett up with more steel to be stronger. And Chris knows all about how hard I ride and he still assures me these things will be fine.

And I feel youse guys know me pretty well, if these things dont work as I was told do you think I wouldn't come on this forum and bitch like a 13 year old school girl?????? Yep. youse will be the first to know if these things dont work as promised.-----Cubby
