What's the verdict on the effectiveness of nitrous on RX-1?

With a turbo that is not as much reason to upgrade. I used to upgrade all the time. Now with the turbo there just isn't any reason to upgrade. It's not all that difficult to remove it either.

There are many choices out there. Everyone has to decide for themselves.

Not me, I upgrade for chassis improvements, ride and handling. If I was all about engines I would still have my 780 Rotax Triple (that engine reminds me of seabisquit). That engine never hiccuped and didn't like to loose. Unfortnately the chassis was dated. Just like our RX-1/Warrior is getting already with sleds like the REV out there. The minute Yamaha comes out with their version of the REV I'm upgrading regardless of its engine.

Like I said, many choices for many different needs.

I have no need to upgrade. Mine already scares the crap out of me. I ride mountains not trails. It's a whole diferrent world than where you ride.

I hope for your sake it's not a Briggs and Straton! ;)!

Yes, a turbo would sure be the ticket BUT.......................I guess I consider myself a western trail rider (maybe it's my northern Minnesota upbringing). Yes, I do climb mountains on occassion and I LOVE boondocking but I would want the nitrous for my mountain airstrip encounters more than for climbing. I'm thinking it would just be nice to know it was there in case the situation demanded a little extra power. It may turn out to be like my new cell phone that takes pictures. It's sure nice to have but I haven't taken a picture yet. PB

Does that field accross from my place qualify as a mountain airstrip? :D Go get the N2O and we'll give it a run. Should be a #$%&* hoot!! Do you want Michael to price one for you?

Speaking of mountain airstrips didn't someone in your group total an RX at the last airstrip you were at? ;)!

I thought you'd never ask if I'd like Michael to shoot me a price. He!! yes! Remember I need a chip for a 95 Powerstroke with a manual transmission too.

Airstrip, Total???? HUM???? I do seem to remember that. I'm still pissed that I didn't get to buy it and fix it. If that sled was totalled I'm a monkeys uncle. PB

I bought a Boondocker system for my 03 RX1 last year and I'll give you my 2 cents worth. First of all it is a nice kit but with so so instructions. You need to go to a welding shop and talk to the owner about renting a 250 lb tank for about $100.00 and then they will fill it up for 62 cents a pound compared to the $3.00 to $4.00 dollars a pound the speed shops want to nail you for. Once hooked up, the 30 HP shot is like kissing your sister. Only when you take out all of the tiny screws will you finally realize the power of the bottle. Unfortunately that only lasts about 3 WOT 1/4 runs and then you are out! Back to the garage you go and 3 more runs back to the garage you go. A real pain in the a$$! I made the mistake of running a 4 degree advance CDI (with 110 octane) and it made only one run before it ate the rings up in the left cylinder. My compression went done to 75 lbs. and to the shop it went for a rebuild. $1250.00 later I took the nitrous off and drove 1000 trouble free miles with my 4 degree advance CDI with cams and was a happy camper. I could have and should have bought a turbo with all of the dough I stuck into the kit. It is not practical unless you don't plan on leaving your lake you are racing on because it just doesn't last long enough. You would have to wear a scuba tank to have any long term fun. I now have a huge nitrous bottle in my garage that just takes up space for the next 4 years until my lease runs out. Like I said, my 2 cents.

That's one of the points I have been trying to make.

Scott - That was a huge mistake, by throwing in 4 degrees advance. If you would have gone the other way, and retard your ignition, you would have really noticed the power. If possible, would I be able to take over the lease on your big bottle? Let me know.

Good info Scott. Now that we have heard the down side. Who wants to tell the up side. There has to be someone with a positive experience?

Spray, I have seen the downside of the turbo modification too so don't think it's simply easy as pie and can't be a pain in the arse too but I must say that WHEN it's working it is indeed impresisve.

Hasn't anyone tried the Holtzman Nitrous system? PB

NOS Pro,

I'll keep the Nitrous for now. My brother and I own a drag bike powered with a 700 Polaris twin and may use the bottle on that. Just started dialing it in this year and we're down to 10.48 ET @ 128.84 MPH. This is with about a 25 feet bog (belt clearance I think) and we are hoping to see the 9's soon. With the nitrous, could be a mid-nine fun toy. Great for bracket racing, as you know you can't miss a gear. It weighs only 312 lbs. Imagine my RX1 with a Turbo in that same frame! Probably run in the eights!!

PS We use to have a mod SRX 440 in it 20 years ago and it turned a 10.84 ET @ 118 MPH. Not bad for a little 440!
