Which chain for 22/38 gearing

Does anyone know if 22/38 gears will fit an 84L chain?

No, won't fit. You need 86 pitch chain which will have a big dogleg. Not a good ratio imo.

Ok sounds good. I ran 22/37 last winter with a 84L but want to gear down a bit…lake running and speed runs in 1000’ once in a while using either max20 or race map

IMO, best all-around ratio for trail riding, at least around upper Midwest.

Here's the formula.

Top gear + bottom gear ÷ 2 + 54.19

22+38÷2+54.19 = 84.19

As Fleecer said bad dog leg as you'd need an 86P chain.

I think it’s 54.13 but could be wrong. .06 should not make much difference anyways.

That looks like an efficient ratio. I’m trying to find a good ratio that works for great top speed since I speed run 1000’ ice often at around 325…..I know I can’t have my cake and eat it too…I ran 22/37 with good results for speed but it was harder on belts on long trai/lake riding days

I found same results - 22/37 gives good top speed but is harder on belts (belt temp is higher). 21/38 speed (according to Cat chart) is 133 @ 8800 RPM with 9 tooth 2.86 pitch drivers. 22/37 - chart shows 143 MPG @ 8800.

BTW - I've seen a guy who was able to get 22/38 to fit with 84 chain. It was a well-worn chain with lots of hours on it. IMO, if you can get 22/38 to fit with 84 chain, the chain is really stretched and in need of replacement. I know 22/38 will not fit with new chain, or even one with low miles on it.
