Which Turbo!

Twin Turbo, You are certainaly correct in most, but not all, your statements. I'm not going to get into a pissing contest. There is a place for both units. There is however, a much wider torque band with the turbo, it would be very evident if you were to dyno them. Turbos build peak boost at wideopen throttle no matter the RPM. Blowers build boost with RPM. I'd be happy to drag race a good blower sled. I'll guarantee the turbo sled would prevail, all things being equal, (boost for boost, equal traction). John, from Proline, just put the blower on his Attak and it runs very well. It is quite impressive. Pulls clutchweight that is unreal for the supers. They will however, not make the HP boost for boost, and that is OK for some, the response is awesome! It is a matter of personal preferance. I opted for the front mount turbo for reasons stated. Others have their reasons. I guess I was saying you can make the turbo kits literally quieter than stock! Chose the one that suits you best, but provide accurate info as not to confuse the issues.
 
Yea Turbos will all ways be the king of speed and HP. Look at any motor Turbos rule.

rear mount bender. outside cold air is better than inside warm air. maybe a little bit more lag. a little bit, but more power
 
Four Stroke,Your right, compressor efficency is very important thats why you must size a turbo correctly for the application or pay a high price in the way of boost threshold (LAG) and high intake temps. That being said boost being equal in both cases you can't help but heat the air more with a turbo because the housing itself gets heat transfer from the turbine side of the turbo. Just put your hand (if you dare) on the compressor side of a turbo after you make a run and see what you have. You don't gey quite the same thing with a supercharger, you will have heat of compresson in both cases but no heat tranfer with a super charger.I'm in the process of checking and comparing inlet temps in the next couple of weeks, I would like to document those temps for myself. :D
 
running frount mount alpine set up on mtn vector,
sled runs perfict, buddy has same setup perfict,
contact alpine motor sports, this is the most reliable set up for the 3 banger I can recommend,
just dial in the boost you need & enjoy!seen alot of set ups out thier & alot of want abees, but as you can see most are doing rx1 & apex applications not a word on the vectors,these guys can put together a turn key sled setup & they do just that. I really enjoy reading about everybody elses problems.

Mike I'm not trying to confuse the issues, but I must ask you because I'm sure you should know, how long does it take a properly clutched snowmobile motor to come up to rpm? Supercharger boost is up faster than turbocharger boost especially in a drag race thus the term "awesome responce". I have a match race set up in two weeks with a turbo buddy. Equal boost 10 psi, same traction products, equal weight sled and rider. maybe slightly different clutching ie Simons clutching against my own on the supercharger and we will see if my hole shot can hold the turbo off in a reasonable distance 1000'. Come and play with us next week the 16th. thru the 18th. Little St.Germain Lake Wisconsin. :D
 
Well that depends on what you consider properly setup. Most twostroke drag sleds, and the fourstrokes for that matter, are at peak hp rpm in 5-7 tenths of a second. You play hell trying to clutch it to get there in a more optimal 1.2 to 1.3 seconds before it reaches peak hp rpm. Any quicker than that and you are either sliping the belt, or spinning the track. Blower vs turbo, boost for boost, the turbo is going to have xx% of advantage. About 15 hp at 200 hp range. Thats a fact. Whatever response advantage you think you might have is lost in belt slip or track spin. You can talk till your blue in the face and you will never convince me otherwise. These machines are driven by belts, not transmisions. Our open mod turbo runs 1.1 sixty footers on the grass. A blower would not improve that time, and would absoultely not make hp downtrack of the turbo, guaranteed. Trust me, you dont want to run my turbo trail sled at 10lbs. You won't be in front of it at any distance!
 
My understanding was super chargers at full boost create high IAT because they are not as effiecient as a turbo charger. IE turbo compressor maps being over 70% (if properly matched to the engine) and super chargers being in the high 50’s (at peak boost). Higher efficiency compressors make for lower IAT’s.

feel your intercooler after a run, mines almost always cold, except when I run 20 PSI.

That’s why we sequential twin turbo our Dodge trucks, two turbochargers running in the middle of their maps puts less heat into the charge air than one running outside it’s map, less heat higher air density and more power and on gas less chance of detonation.

Sorry I can’t help but to be bias, I’m a turbo guy!
 
Turbo It

I got a vector with a powderlites setup on it, had it up to 17# this week end, I can't see the supercharger setup keeping up to it. This thing spools up fast, by the time the tac sweeps past the 7 the boost gauge is up to 10#. I have played with blowers before both positive displacement and Centrifugal, never on a sled though. I would not think a turbo could do this, until you ride one you just can not appreciate it. The vector has a great torque curve, a littel week from the factory but you want to change that anyway. The fit and finish on Daves kit is top notch, a good dude to deal with to.

The typical superchargers like Vortech or Procharger don't have quite as good efficency maps as a properly sized turbo. The new kid on the block Rotrex has a unique drive system that can spin the compressor much faster than the other centrifugal blowers much like the speeds the turbo's are seeing and the effiency maps will show simillar results. As with all blowers you still need to size the units to hit these efficency islands as they are called, and when you do you will see the rewards. I'm a long time turbo guy but this new breed of blowers got my attention. :D

Turbo is better for a trail sled simply because you can start your trail ride at 13lbs with a full tank of race gas, stop at half a tank, fill back up and turn it down to 9 or so, then if you ride more you can turn it down to 5 or 6, etc.

I'm working on that there is a way just have to find the right BOV and bleed off the extra boost any suggestions as to the right valve tried a Greddy but it doen't seal at any boost level it seems. :D
