Hi folks.
My sled started (07 Phazer w/McXpress kit) a while ago to smoke a lot, and with a very strong smell as soon it got warm. Cold engine at idle speed is normal.
At that time I found a big amount of oil in the air pipings and intercooler, so I thought the turbo was the problem since there most probably was a internal oil leak to the compressor side so it burned oil.
Must mention that I have checked the engine vent and oil return, and everything was okey.
Anyhow, I have now replaced the turbo cartridge, but the problem is not gone...now it smokes even more. I also have a constant level of cooling liquid, so I have more or less concluded that it's not the head gasket.
How anyone here experienced the same or similar problem with your 4stroke sleds?
Any help would be highly appreciated!
Thanks in advance..

sounds like you have a valve or piston ring problem if it is still using oil. if oil level is the same, i would swish out the muffler with solvent next to eliminate it being loaded up with oil.

post this in the turbo section. You will get more responce. Some one had this same problem and the motor was shot.

My bet is kinked oil return line or the connector to crankshaft for the oil return pump is faulty.

I agree with you on your assumption that the head gasket is blown. It can't be anything else as you are blowing white smoke, this happens when burning liquids like water or coolant.
My bet is on blown head gaskets.

Sorry, missed the "white" smoke, yes, is it white it's most likely water that get burnt = head gasket

Thank you all for a quick reply!
First of all, sorry for the duplicate..
The odd thing is that the coolant is still at the same level...showing no loss at all.. :/ This thing have been a pain in the #*$&@ for some time now. Usually it is black or dark smoke when it is burning oil, but when I found oil in the intercooler I was pretty sure that was the problem, still if it was white smoke. Funny thing is that it have the color from burned coolant, but smell from burned oil..
I was also thinking that maybe the piston/rings where worn out causing pressure in the crankhouse and again blowing the oil back through the oil return hose from the turbo, since the Phazer dont have oil return pump.. but the results from the compression test / cold engine was 10.2bar.
So, it only starts smoking when the engine is warm. Smoke have a really strong smell and its white. Worst of all is that the poor engine only have 900km on its back, with a boost not higher than 0.8bar.

Not sure if possable but would a full synthetic oil burn white, may still be an oil problem. I've seen 2 strokes that dont smoke at all with synthetic?

The white smoke makes a guy thing antifreeze but oil in the intercooler tells me it could be the MCX oil pump connector is either broke off or the pump has crapped out. My first incling is Check the oil return pump.

Yeah, thats what made me do the first conclusion that it's something with the oil return system.
Regarding synthetic oil, 2-stroke oil is developed to burn with the fuel/air in an combustion, 4-stroke oil is not, thats why theres smoke when 4-stroke oil is within the combustion, some oil of today might turn out white, but "old" rules tell that burned oil is dark.
You should loose either water or oil anyhow if theres smoke when you drive!

You might be getting to much oil to the turbo ,what size of pilot jet do you have in the oil line ?

Hmm.. Oil return pump is not on Phazer's turbo-kit. It is only pump on Nytro and Rx1.
Allright, as soon as I saw the white smoke after the replacement of the new cartiridge, i stopped the engine in frustration.
Maybe the smoke now was caused by old impurities/oil in the system from the old turbo. Still if I cleaned out both the air-pipings and intercooler. The engine is anyway now on my bench dismantled, without any remarks.
Was considering that oil vapour is enough to make it smoke like hell.
Does anyone have any suggestion to a solvent I can use to clean out this?

A couple thought's i have based on a CPR Apex that i had. Not familiar with your setup but can you run the sled on the stand with the charge air tube off at the turbo to see if the oil is indeed coming from the turbo? If it is check to see if it has a pilot jet in the oil supply line? The jet in mine was way to big and was pushing oil past the seal in the turbo. They say some oil residue in the charge air cooler is normal but not a lot. The seal in some of these turbo's is like a piston ring and will push oil by easily if over oiled. If your crank vent is dry and you have any amount of oil in your cooler i would not suspect the motor and would look else where first. If you had any amount of oil in the tube's and cooler it would take time to blow it all through and i would recommended cleaning it out instead of running it as it has been said that oil can cause detonation. My thought's based on my experience's. Good luck, kviper
