I am in the process of putting a kit together from scratch . I will be using some components from existing turbo kits but was wondering if anyone else has done it this way?
Have people tried different turbos ? KKK (T-24) Garrett etc. What kind of carb mods are required, and who makes the best intercooler.

turbo

You could go with a garrett gt-22 : around 280 hp a gt-25 or gt-28rs:around 350 hp. you will need a thick head gasket and or low comp. pistons, depending on power you wish. I would go with a powderlites aftercooler ( alpine motorsport). ;)!

i think snowfever built his from scratch last year and did an incredable job. he had pics posted as well, do a search.

Snowfever did build his from scratch last year. He got rid of it this year and bought an MCxpress rear mount. Moral of the story is this: if you want to tinker and fiddle around all season try and build your own. If you want to ride buy a proven kit. IMO the season is too short to be screwing around.

I already have the KKK turbo and wastegate. This is a fairly compact unit and set up to deliver 8 lbs boost. The turbo itself will probably only push a maximum of 15-16 lbs. Its pretty small but appopriate for a trail based kit.
The only thing I am unsure of is what measures need to be taken in setup of the carbs. I have looked at a couple of kits and they were using balance tubes and other vacume lines on the CV carbs

RX is right the season is short do you want to spend your time riding or wrenching. What are the numbers on the 3K turbo just because it is small doesn't mean it will work. It might be to small and then open up a whole new can of worms.

I agree with what these guys are saying, if you have the cash buy a turbo kit from someone as they will have done all the R&D. If you don't have the cash but do have the means to build one, it is worth the effort. I do have a MC-Xpress rear mount now but my set up last year was a HELL of alot cheaper (1,800 Canadian), it did have some features that were better (which I have changed to on this MC kit) and we did some official drag racing last year and I did put 2 of the 3 MC-Xpress turbos on the trailer in 2 diffrent classes. The MC-Xpress kit is better then the one I built for sure, but it ain't cheap.

3K volvo turbo

the 3K volvo turbo is the upgrade model from MC express.

it can produce up to 26 pounds of boost and rated to 400 hp.

its a keeper ;)!

Lakercr built his own. I saw the final version in his sled and it looked great.

building ur own turbo is pretty cool but i think it is something u should do in the summer time and get it well tuned b4 winter rolls in

I'm not too worried about missing ride time, I have an F-7 and a modded up MXZ-X with 800 3cyl. I just want to make sure the Turbo I have will work on a small displacement engine.
