had a battery tender on my sled all off seasaon, now battery is deader than a door nail. I think the tender might of shorted out, could it have shorted and drained the battery or did it just fry the battery.

whats is the best reliable battery out thier. the thing that scares me with this sled is having a dead battery on the trail and no way to start this thing.

you sure you didnt leave a power draining item on?
I'd hook it to an optimate 3 and try and recover it

no key was out, i dont want to take the chance recovering it, its been drainned to many times, and has been getting weaker. could battery tender somehow drain battery if shorted, i think wires got stuck in shock while charging and i did not notice it woops

a regular battery tender wont do...and yes it MAY be recoverable..find someone with a optimate 3 ....features a desulfating mode and will tell you if unrecoverable...btw....have an other current draws...face shield hook or something in the 12v outlet?

ok what is an optimate 3, is that a type of charger, and the battery tender i was using was from harbor freight for 5 bucks

battery problem

I had the same thing happen to me after the first year. I left the sled on, not running, just the key turned on by mistake and it drained the battery dead, I thought. After going to the dealer to see if they could get it back, was told that if it drops below a certain level its done. Started looking around for another battery and got talking with someone and tried to fix myself. Well after bitching out yamaha about the fact this fairly new battery was done, they also recommended to recharge it, should be able to fix. I had an old battery charger from crampy tire and put it to jump start level and it came back after about 30mins of that and then I put it to a regular charge and now have it on a battery tender and put it on after riding and now all summer long. Pretty good for a done battery as told to me by the yamy dealer in markham. You have to be careful not to let the battery get down to low and the opti battery charger is the one yamy recomments. I hope this helps.

I bought a couple of those too. The first was DOA. The second has given unpredictable performance. Sometimes it appears to be working, others it does not. I ended up calling both a lesson and pitched them.....

Point being, that charger could be the source of your evil.... FWIW

Not that you have to spend big money on everything, but certain things you have to bite the bullet.

my dealer included a optimate 3 when i bought the sled and have had no problems, the desulfate mode does work and have brought dead atv batteries that normal chargers wouldnt charge back to life with it.

There is now an Optimate 4 available. The Optimate is not simply a "trickle charger" or a "battery tender". The Optimate reconditions the battery. I have brought batteries back from the dead with my Optimate.

The Optimate can be left connected to your battery for as long as you would like. I keep my Optimate connected during the off season and between my bi-weekly sled trips during the winter.

thanks guys but will this fix a battery that wont hold a charge, it will charge but if its sits for a week its dead

yes it may..make sure it has sufficient fluid and give it a go..

My battery died last year. Only problem I ever had with the sled. I do have a optimate 3 and it said the battery was fine. My dealer took out the battery and put it on their commercial charger/desulfater and it said the battery was toast. It would work one start and then one hour later be dead. Intermittent problem of some kind in the battery.
