Will a 16 inch wide track fit under the Attak?

Indiana, the vast snowmobile-owner's wasteland...
I'm about 2 weeks from placing an order for a 2007 Attak....trying to figure out how to make it exactly what I want. I'm sure I'll want more flotation and I'm certain that the stock 1.25 Ripsaw that comes with my sled is never even going to hit the snow...Ebay here it comes! Same for the skis and I've read a lot about those here and don't need help with those...

But right now I'm wondering what to do with the track. I don't like the idea of stretching it to 144 unless there's no other alternative.

So....how about dropping in a 1.5 lug, 136 x 16 incher ala 2005/06 REV Renegade style? Anyone done this, or do any of you dealer-types know for a FACT whether or not there's enough side clearance in the tunnel to fit the extra width?

Thanks bunches! Looking forward to joining the 4 stroke crowd for next winter...

I had the same exact question 6 months ago and some told me it was too tight, but nobody really checked... Looking forward to answers here....

If one of you Attak or Apex owners could take a few minutes to hold a ruler to measure the gaps on each side between the tunnel and the track, and maybe stick your head up under the flap to see if there's any other potential interference if the track was 1/2 inch closer on each side, I'm sure Rash will buy you a beer!

My understanding is that the drive sprockets and rails are in the same location on the 15's vs. the 16's. Someone correct me if I'm wrong....

I'm a little surprised someone on this site hasn't tried this mod yet. Seems to me the most natural and easy way to add flotation.

16 inch track

Funny you should ask this as just last night I was wondering the same thing as i was putting new carbides on my Attak. I did not get out a tape measure, but there is more than the 1/2 inch needed, but how much extra room do you need for clearance? I do not know myself. Also there was one bolt sticking though, that I thought may need cut off to flush. I really didn't look everything over, but an initial look says it is possible. One thing I did notice is that I don't think you can go anymore than 1.25 without changing to smaller drivers, as the cooler protectors are very close to the stock track (mine is a Ice ripper though)

Hope this helps, but I would also like to hear from somebody who has actually done the switch.

Kirk

we're getting closer to the answer, I'm going to the fridge right now......

...OkaY, got two coor's light with your name on it... What eles do we need to make the transaction. Is 1/2 inch on each side enough...smaller drivers.... lets here it...

Thanks for your thoughts and having a look-see, this helps a bunch. I have to say your comments about it possibly needing smaller drivers really surprises me, though....I have been under the impression that many people here have put 1.5 inch lugs (15 inches wide, I presume) under theirs with no mods at all. But again, if I'm wrong, someone who's done so please correct me on that.

Maybe I need to up the ante since Rash's Coors is starting to get warm. Howsabout a Guiness? I've got a few of those in the fridge....I'll even pay for shipping..... 8)

I remember having a 1987 SkiDoo MX long track that had a 16 incher under it. It really only had approx 1/4 inch clearance, or even a bit less, on each side of the track, and on very rare occasion I'd hear it harmlessly rub the tunnel just for a moment when I was sliding in a turn and the track hooked a rock or snow bank or something. But under normal riding, the track seemed to stay pretty straight and true on that sled and rarely touched the tunnel. I don't think a huge amount of clearance is necessary...

I may go over to Doo-Talk later today and find a newer Renegade owner with a 16 incher and see how much clearance they have...

I asked this question 2 months ago at the Mnt. Site. I was told that it would require changing out the mount plates to the Mnt Sled type? I didn't investigate any further at that time. Go to the Mountian Forum and do a search....... good luck!

With new drop bracket it will fit, you need at least 16 3/8 between bracket, it will give you 3/16th on each side. Sometime it will rub at little, but nothing to worry about. ;)!

This is good info. I don't have the sled yet to be able to look at it, so I'm not sure what the "drop bracket" and/or "mount plates" are. But the fact that it sounds like it's possible with a simple mod tells me that this is a sled that can be easily converted to a better crossover sled than Yamaha builds it to be.

Here's a couple replies I got over at Dootalk regarding the Renegade and a conversion someone else did on a different skid...apparently with a 16 incher they only have about 1/8 inch of clearance on each side....so if such tight clearances work on these sleds, I see no reason it wouldn't work on the Attak as well:

"Their is only about 1/8" clearance for the 16" track on each side. The previous reply didn't have a clue! Here is how to do it if the tunnel is wide enough. Make a measuring stick exactly 16" long (piece of plastic pipe , wood, whatever) . Now mark in the tunnel where the track runs with a magic marker, then drop skid and run your measuring stick through the tunnel by your lines. What you run into is what you have to take down and or modify. On My 05 550 summit it was a few rivet heads and the bumper bolts at the rear of the tunnel under full compression of the skid."

"I just finished putting the 16" wide track in an 01 ZX chassis. Not very much clearance; probably only about 1/8" each side as LRD said. I marked the track, then ran a piece of ABS pipe width of track around the marked area. I'm running an M10, so the ski-doo suspension brackets could go. Had to shave down the chaincase mounting bolts and a couple of rivet heads. My track was just a little over 16", probably 16 1/8"

I guess it's time to place an order...when the sled arrives this fall I'll figure it out from there.

Thanks to all! And still please chime in if you have something to add or recommend!

drop bracket is where the rear suspension mount. Yamaha Bracket (i dont know 2006 model, but until 2005 has an offset they are about 3/4 thick with the offset. I build mine with 3/16'' 6061 aluminium and i put another one by the outside just to be sure that the hole will not loosen up.

here a pic of mine, look at the rear of the sled, the gray bracket. It's the first model i made, not the best looking one. the other are nicer.

Thanks for the clarification & photo, Tundra. I see what you're talking about now.

But DANG! I found another snafu in my plan!

I just did an intensive search for my dream 16 x 136 x 1.5 inch track. It does not even exist, to the best of my knowledge. Apparently the Renegades have 1.75 inchers.

So you can get a 1.75 incher (Renegade style), or you can get plenty of 15 inchers in many styles, but my dream combo does not seem to exist.

Now I have to assume that going to 1.75 inches will require smaller drivers as well. This is getting to be too much work.

I think maybe I'll stick with the 15 incher and maybe get a 1.5 lug Camoplast Intense track....I'd expect it to have better paddles for powder than a 1.5 ripsaw and should still be good on the trails.

Anyone else have a different suggestion? I'm certainly open....or if someone out there can find me a 16 x 136 x 1.5, PLEASE share the source.

I'll shut up now. Thanks again to all.

Just put on a Camoplast # 0602-904 1.6 track on my Attak. 15x136x1.6" This track has the cutouts so the heat exchanger protectors can stay in.Other wise without the cut outs you have to remove the front heat exch. protectors(the two 1' square bars) Pulls much better in off trail conditions. Happy I am !

what is exactly the problem with changine drivers?

So out of curiosity and perhaps my own wonderings for the same mod why not change drivers and run a 141" 3" pitch track with 1.75" paddles or 2.0 inch paddles? Drivers aren't that expensive, are the after market drivers unreliable or vibration prone......
