Wind proofing a snowmobile Jacket?

Irv
I have been wearing the FXR Floatex jacket and pants for two seaons now. Except for last season, we get some cold days here in Manitoba. I found on cold days (-20 C) running across a lake or open field I can feel the wind, but not enough to make me cold, once I get into the twisties I'm toastie. I wear moisture wicking under- shirt and longjohns, and lite cotton shirt and pants over that. A buddy of mine retired his old no -name jacket and pants (must have been 15 years old) for just the regular XFR set-up, and he says the old was just as good as the new, but was never cold. XFR seems to be the number one jacket in this area,no one has ever said they do not like them. Maybe the Floatex design uses a different outer shell to help in the floation.

That is definitely the worst for me as well, I feel it in my upper arms and a portion of my chest but the rest of me is toasty warm so I assume(almost certain) that it is my mid height windshield that directs the air to those areas, and with my suit not being windproof enough, I get cold.

I only wear long johns and a pair of track pants in my bibs and my legs have never been cold, which I attribute to the fact they aren't exposed to the wind like my upper arms and chest are.

Last year I tried the Dri-Wear from Mark's WWH and it seemed to help, but it wasn't a very cold winter so I never really got to put them to the test like I would have.

At this point, I am going to try and find a thin windproof jacket that I can put on just before I put my jacket on and see what that does?
If it doesn't work then this suit will be going up for sale and I can start the whole "looking for a good suit" thread all over again :o|

Bought the FXR Team Yamaha jacket and bib along with the FXR undergrear about three seasons ago. The suit was awesome on while riding my Viper with a large windshield. I just wore the undergear, jacket and bibs for most of the season. On the real cold days I would add my TY sweatshirt. On warm days I opened the vents and stood when I could to keep cool. Found it very warm while hiding behind the Viper's wind protection. Now I find myself wearing a sweatshirt, jeans and carry a thin vest with me when driving the Attak. Alot more wind hitting my chest. The extra vest seems to help alot.

Some of the headgear out there has windproof lining it it around the neck area. That should cover the above the Tek area. I think Klim makes some, might be a little pricey but if it works!
Thanks XFH, definitely going to be looking into something that is 100% windproof from here on in so hopefully the Klim stuff is and they carry what I am looking for. ;)!

Try a taller windshield that will fix all the problems. :jump:
If they made a taller 40th or a redesigned 40th I would be all over it but as far as I know the one I have is the only one that came with these sleds. :dunno:

Irv- I wear underarmour "cold gear" and it's mint. ridden in atleast 20-30 below with no issues while wearing either my yami leather or yami team jacket. Super warm and will also wick moisture. I am not kidding stuff is awesome.

Thanks Dexter, I have heard it is great stuff too but unless it is 100% windproof, I don't think I will be any further ahead?

My upper arms and chest are the only spots that get chilly, the rest of me (that is out of the wind) is toasty warm, so I know my suit is not windproof enough.
So if the new underwear I want to purchase, (under armor/klim jacket etc) isn't 100% windproof, then I know I will be no further ahead.

Whatever you buy, make sure it's Gortex. That stuff is awesome. Wind proof, water proof and expensive as hell, but it flat out works.

i wear a super thin rain/wind jacket. its Fox brand have had it for 3 years now. if i dont have it, or its zipped half way down i can deffinitly feel it on my chest. i had a white camo yamaha mountain jacket for 2 years, and now a black team yamaha FXR jacket. both jackets have the removable liner. i felt the wind at anyting over 90km/h on either a vector or the phazer. deffinitly wearing a wind, or rain jacket will keep the wind off you, but might not allow you to breathe, so wearing under armour, or marks work wearhouse brand clothing that will wick moisture away will be the answer.

this wind jacket almost feels like a pair of board, or swim shorts. super thin, no lining.

Irv, I dont know for sure if its proof or not, but it's designed for skiers. I have never felt a draft and wear a tshirt on top.

Thanks STP, now that I have a few choices, I'll have a look for one when I go to Royal.

I have also been in conversation with a lady at R.U. outside gear, she is recommending a certain pullover but failed to tell me if it is an outwear or innerwear product? Hoping to hear back from her tomorrow.

Thanks Dexter, I see National Sports carries their products so I will check it out next time I am in there ;)!

Thanks to everyone else as well, I now have some pretty good leads so hopefully I can find what I am looking for?

I appreciate your help ;)!

after i made the switch from polaris to yamaha this last fall i still kept my polaris jacket. it is a thin gortex jacket and is absolutely amazing. i never wear anything more than a t shirt under it even in the cold north dakota winters. sometimes in the mornings it is a little chilly, but only until you get riding. keeps the wind off of you 100%. i would never buy another jacket that isnt full gortex.
