Wind proofing a snowmobile Jacket?

I bought a new fxr yamaha coat at the snow show this year. I find it to be really warm. Its at least as warm as my 2 coldwave coats. I cant compare to a klim coar as i dont have one, but i do have klim boots, gloves, and some other gear too, and they are noticeably warmer than the gear they replaced.

Hey Irv, How about a giant plastic bag with 3 holes. One for your head and two for youre arms. No wind gettin through that! LOL!!! Just funnin ya. Nothing worse than getting cold when you're trying to enjoy the day.

When I posted up looking for input on sled gear, everyone who owned FXR gear said it was great stuff and nobody ever complained about being cold so that is why I purchased it.

Looking over some numbers for the FXR Floatex gear I seen 10,000mm/8,000mm something or other when they were talking about wind/cold protection or something like that, but on other FXR jackets/suits (non floatex gear) the end number was smaller, like 10,000mm/5,000mm.

Not really sure what those numbers mean, but my guess is not all FXR gear is created equal when it comes to warmth and wind protection?

I just found out yesterday that the R.U. Outside pullover that I have been eyeballing is meant to be worn underneath my jacket which is great news. ;)!
(Just waiting for a return e-mail from her about cost of shipping/handling etc.)

Irv let me tell you my cold suit story and it may help you.First of all I have a Choko suit and my GF has a FXR suit.We did the Rap tour this year and a couple of morning it was -26 C .I was cold like you described up my arms and across my chest. My GF was warm in her suit with no complaints .I was uncomfortable all day.I have the low stock windshield and she has the mid height so I figured the was making me cold .I could feel the wind through my suit I thought.Any how I was cold all season until I went to Kirkland Lake -24 C with some buddies and had four layers under my suit I felt like the Michelin man and was still cold.Well I finally figured it out and all I had to do was cinch down my wrist straps.I have the Klim gloves with a overlap up over the sleeve that were letting wind up my sleeve and across my chest I guess because I was roasting after I made the adjustment.Hope this helps .I felt like a little girl complaining about the cold, especially to my GF. :o|

Dosnt matter how wind proof your stuff is, if the wind is pushing it against your body you will get cold. Wear my fxr stuff with proper under layering, dont get to cold. And it gets damn cold here in northern manitoba.

Thanks for the info HX. ;)!

I am currently running a fairly high on the arm glove so I am not so sure that would be a problem with me as well?
Just asking, but if that were indeed the case, would your hand/wrist area also not be cold?

Like I have stated before, it is only my upper arms, (half way up between my elbows and shoulders) and my upper chest, all other areas (that are out of the wind) are toasty warm.

I will still try your suggestion next year just in case that is the problem with me as well, but just thinking back I do believe I always tighten my glove straps everytime I put them on? :dunno:

What do you wear for under layers Turkster?

I wear Stanfield long johns, tops and bottoms, a med thickness turtle neck, a thicker sweater over that then my Tek-vest and my fully lined Jacket. Not sure there is much pushing against me with that much gear on but anything is possible I guess?

When I bought this suit, I was hoping to eliminate at least half of the gear I wore, but that didn't happen and now I am looking at purchasing another layer!! :o|

Hi Irv,

I too had the problem of being cold often and purchased an FXR suit a couple of years back. It is qutie warm and fairly windproof but not perfect. Bought my dad a FXR floatex suit and he didn't complain about it being cold but it is definitely thicker than my old jacket and pants. My older jacket is a goretex jacket and it is windproof. Goretex works but is expensive and depending on how much use you get out of it, hard to justify the cost.

I don't like all of the newer jackets as they don't provide the same amount of protection on the neck under your helmet. I purchased a balaclava a number of years back and it was the best investment. I was freezing on my neck and got frostbite and this stopped it instantly. It is the unwind (you can get it at royal) and it is windproof and comes down onto the chest. It not only keeps the neck area warm but the top of the chest. It also keeps my face warm enough when it's cold out and my eletric visor does not work well. They used to make a sweater or vest out of this same material for the unwind system. I picked up a vest for my dad and he loves it. I don't think they make them anymore but you might check if they still have some old stock in the showroom.

Sorry, forgot to add that FXR has a couple of different sprays to help protect your suit and give it a "new" finish. I used it to help my older suit as I found it did not have the best water repellency like when it was new and it helped a bit.

I have the Togwotee Klim gloves with a large cuff http://yamaha-motor.ca/apparel/apparel_ ... ubgroup=19. Yes that is were I felt the cold from my elbows up and upper chest and not one bit around my wrists. The other thing is that its the coat sleeve straps that I had to tighten up.I keep my glove loose for comfort .It took 3000Km to figure were the cold was coming from or the heat was leaking out.The gloves that breath I think were letting the cold in is my best guess.

I just read the above post and forgot to mention that I bought a new balaclava from choko with the large neck protection that stopped all the wind coming in my helmet but still had the other leak in the arms.Made up for the shitty helmet that leaks cold as well.

I just find it amazing, that you wear that much under your jacket, and get cold. Just maybe, you have too many layers on. Does all that still give you good freedom of movement ? You should have a little room under everything, to let the insulation do its job. All your layers should be some type of synthetic material, that has wicking capability, and I hope that is what you're using.

Great info Yamaha, I will be sure to check out both items ;)!

Yeah, quite a bit I know Nick :o|
I did purchase some Dr-Wear and a thinner turlte neck this past winter and went without the outer sweater to see if what your saying helped, but with only managing 250 miles and with those miles being on warmer days, I couldn't really tell if it was an improvement or not?

I am going to get that R.U outside underlayerI posted above so hopefully just that and my turtle neck will be enough next year?
